ðŋ Chiang Rai Wins Global Recognition
AIPH World Green City Award 2026
Chiang Rai makes history for Thailand, winning Category Winner in "Living Green for Social Cohesion & Inclusive Communities" at the AIPH World Green City Awards 2026 in Bari, Italy on September 15, 2026 â the first time a Thai city has won a global award at this event since AIPH launched the competition.
The winning project, "Green City Chiang Rai â Plant Trees, Plant People," was developed through collaboration between Mae Fah Luang University, the Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage, and the Heritage Asia Research Consortium (HARC).
What makes the project stand out isn't just expanding green space or planting trees for beauty â it's connecting the environment, ecosystems, cultural heritage, public space, community economy, and human potential all together.
From Green City to BlueâGreenâHuman
The real heart of it isn't just "Plant Trees" â it's "Plant People": growing ecosystems, growing knowledge, and building human potential, all at once.

ð Blue-Green-Earth: Transcending Administrative Boundaries toward Networks of Life
In reality, water has never ceased to flow because of provincial lines, and cultural roots have never truly been separated by geopolitical borders. âBlue-Green-Earthâ is a visionary territorial development framework designed to guide Thailandâs Upper Central Provinces (Chainat, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, and Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya) toward a sustainable future across three interconnected systems:
âĒ ð BLUE (Water Systems): Seamlessly linking irrigation and hydrological management across the Chao Phraya River Basin to bolster flood resilience.
âĒ ðą GREEN (Agro-Ecological Systems): Elevating landscapes into safe, high-value agricultural networks to secure regional food supplies.
âĒ â°ïļ EARTH (Humanity & Culture): Celebrating local wisdom, architecture, and river basin culture, driven by local entrepreneurs and the younger generation.

Assoc. Prof. Surasak Kangkhao (Ajarn S), founder of the Heritage Asia Research Community (HARC) and the working team of the Community of Practice Network (www.harc.asia), would like to express heartfelt thanks to all esteemed architects and experts who joined us in offering valuable insights and taking part as guest critics in our recent design review and exchange session.
It was a truly inspiring day during the Final Project Presentation for ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 6 at SIET : KMITL.

Under the theme âRamkhamhaeng District Design â Transit-Oriented Development (TOD)â, students explored urban systems through both collective strategies and individual design visions. From city-scale planning to architectural details, each project contributed to a cohesive and forward-thinking urban framework.
The session was structured into two parts:
âĒ Morning: Overall presentations and collective evaluation of all projects
âĒ Afternoon: Group-based critiques with in-depth feedback and scoring by invited experts and faculty
We would like to extend our deepest appreciation to all Studio Critics & Academic Advisors for their time, knowledge, and dedication in shaping the next generation of designers. Your thoughtful guidance has made this academic exchange both meaningful and impactful.

Assoc. Prof. Surasak Kangkhao and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chaturong Louhapensang, together with the Heritage Academic and Research Center (HARC) network from King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, participated in a consultation meeting at Ayutthaya Provincial Hall to discuss a research and development project on systemic flood management for Thailandâs Upper Central Provinces.
The project seeks to transform flood crises into opportunities through Sustainable Flood Risk Management (SFRM) integrated with the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy model. It introduces a Geo-Agri-Urban strategy emphasizing ecological buffer zones, adaptive urban design, flood-resilient agriculture, and smart water technologies (GIS and IoT). A pilot sandbox area covering Chainat, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, and Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya will support balanced flood retention and reduce downstream impacts within the Chao Phraya River Basin.
Expected outcomes include reduced flood risks, stronger local economies, ecological restoration, and improved quality of life through integrated and data-driven regional water management.
