Today we celebrate the beautiful diversity that makes South Africa home β€” our languages, food, music, traditions, families and the stories passed from one generation to the next. πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦

Happy Heritage Day, South Africa!

What is one tradition from your family or culture that you hope will always be passed down?

There are moments when words feel inadequate.

As women, we are grieving. As a country, we should be deeply concerned. And as a doctor whose life’s work is caring for women, I cannot remain silent when women’s lives are being taken.

My heart, prayers and deepest sympathies are with every family mourning a woman they loved. 🀍

Women deserve safety. Women deserve justice. Women deserve to live.

16/09/2026

Women have been taught the rules for years.

Don't walk alone. Don't run alone. Don't go out too late. Watch what you wear. Share your location.

Call when you arrive. Be vigilant. Be careful. But women are already careful.

What we should be asking is why women cannot simply live without constantly calculating the risk of violence.

As a doctor who has dedicated my work to women's health, I cannot speak about the wellbeing of women without also caring deeply about their safety.

My heart is with the women whose lives have been taken, their families, and every woman who is carrying fear because of what is happening in our communities.

Women deserve more than advice on how to survive. They deserve to live safely and freelyπŸ’œπŸ€

β€œDr Rockson, is aesthetic gynaecology actually for me?”

The answer depends on what you're experiencing and why. Aesthetic gynaecology isn't about telling women that their bodies need to be β€œfixed”. It begins with understanding the concern.

πŸ’œ Things don't feel the same after childbirth.
Changes in the pelvic floor or intimate area may affect comfort, sensation or bladder control.

πŸ’œ Intimacy has become uncomfortable.
Pain or discomfort can have several causes, so understanding why you're experiencing it should always come first.

πŸ’œ You're experiencing vaginal dryness.
Hormonal changes, particularly around perimenopause and menopause, can affect intimate comfort, and different treatment options may be appropriate depending on the cause.

πŸ’œYou simply don't feel like yourself anymore.
Changes to your intimate health can affect your confidence and quality of life β€” and you should never feel embarrassed about discussing them.

Assessment first. Treatment second. Because the right treatment should be determined by the woman and her individual concern, not by a trend.

This International Gynaecological Awareness Day, let's make intimate health easier to talk about β€” without embarrassment, judgement or shame.

Baby has arrived, and suddenly everyone is focused on what baby needs. But Mama, your body is recovering too.

So, which supplements should you be taking postpartum?
πŸ’Š Iron may be recommended if you had low iron during pregnancy, anaemia or significant blood loss around delivery.
β˜€οΈ Vitamin D requirements vary and may depend on your individual levels, diet and circumstances.
πŸ₯› Calcium and other nutrients remain important, particularly while breastfeeding, but your individual diet and health needs matter.
🀱🏾 Your prenatal supplement may sometimes continue postpartum, especially while breastfeeding, but this should be discussed with your healthcare provider.

And remember: more supplements don't automatically mean better recovery. Your postpartum needs should be based on your health, your diet, your pregnancy and your delivery.

If you're unusually tired, dizzy, struggling with recovery or simply unsure what your body needs, speak to your doctor rather than guessing.

Baby's nutrition matters. Yours does too.

Welcome to your new season of motherhood, MamaπŸ’œ

There will be a lot to remember once your bundle of joy arrives - and between the feeds, nappies, sleepless nights and getting to know this little person, you may forget a few things about you. So save this one and come back to it when you need it:

🀍 Your recovery matters too. Your baby needs care, but so do you.
🌿 Give your body time. It has carried and delivered a whole human being. Healing is a process.
🫢🏾 Your emotions matter. Postpartum isn't only a physical recovery. Pay attention to how you're feeling, too.
✨ You don't have to β€œbounce back.” There is no deadline for your body to look or feel a certain way after birth.
🩺 Please keep your postpartum appointment. It's your opportunity to check your recovery and talk about anything from breastfeeding and contraception to your physical and emotional wellbeing.

You may be a new mother, or a mother again; either way, every baby brings a new season. Welcome to yours.

Save this for later or share it with a mama who has just welcomed her little one.

🩸 Dysmenorrhea: When Period Pain Becomes Too Much 🩸

Ladies, dysmenorrhea is that relentless, throbbing pain that radiates through your lower abdomen, back, and thighs. It strikes just before your period, peaks on days 1-2, and fades; but not for everyone.

For some, it’s a brief discomfort. For others, it's a torment that steals days each month. But could there be more than meets the eye? Conditions like endometriosis, adenomyosis, or fibroids might be lurking beneath the surface, making each cycle unbearable.

Treating the cause is the key to dealing with these excruciating period pains.

πŸ” Ready to Break Free? Reach out if you experience:

πŸ˜– Pain that takes over your life every month.
πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’« Agony that keeps getting worse over time.

πŸ’œLadies, here are the three major things that you may be missing by not tracking your cycle...

Tracking your menstrual cycle offers numerous benefits for your health and well-being. Here are three key reasons why you should start today:

1. Predict Fertility Windows: Knowing your cycle helps you identify your most fertile days, which is crucial whether you’re planning to conceive or trying to avoid pregnancy.

2. Monitor Your Health: Regular tracking can reveal patterns and irregularities in your cycle, helping you detect potential health issues early.

3. Manage Symptoms: By keeping track of your symptoms, you can better manage PMS, plan for those tougher days, and discuss any concerns with your gynaecologist.

Stay informed and take charge of your reproductive health. Start tracking your cycle today! Please visit your nearest gynaecologists should you note irregularities with your cycle.

I hear this from my patients constantly: β€œI'm breastfeeding, so I can't fall pregnant yet, right?” It's one of the oldest myths in postpartum care, and it catches so many new moms off guard.

Here's the truth: your body can start ovulating again before your very first postpartum period arrives; meaning you could conceive before you even have a signal that your fertility is back.

Breastfeeding does offer some natural protection through the Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM), but only if you're exclusively breastfeeding, your baby is under 6 months old, and your period hasn't returned.

The moment any one of those changes, so does your risk.

Save this, share it with a mom who needs it, and if you're postpartum, book a check-in so we can talk through what contraception makes sense for you.
