Flexible Pavement vs Rigid Pavement
Flexible Pavement
Mainly uses bituminous/asphalt layers.
Load is distributed gradually through multiple layers.
Generally has lower initial construction cost.
More susceptible to deformation, rutting, and temperature effects.
Maintenance and periodic resurfacing are commonly required.
Rigid Pavement
Mainly uses a concrete slab.
The slab distributes wheel loads over a wider area.
Usually has higher initial construction cost.
Generally provides high structural strength and durability.
Joints are provided to control movement and cracking.
Key Difference: Flexible pavement relies mainly on the combined strength of its layered system, while rigid pavement relies heavily on the structural capacity of the concrete slab.

Rutting vs Cracking vs Ravelling
Rutting: Permanent longitudinal depressions or grooves form in the wheel paths due to repeated traffic loading, weak pavement layers, or poor compaction.
Cracking: Cracks develop in the asphalt surface due to fatigue, temperature changes, aging, or structural movement. Severe fatigue cracking can form interconnected “alligator” patterns.
Ravelling: Asphalt aggregate particles become loose and detach from the pavement surface because of poor bonding, aging, inadequate compaction, or weathering.
In short:
Rutting = Depression
Cracking = Fissures
Ravelling = Loss of Aggregate

Clay soils may appear similar on the surface, but their mineral composition determines how they perform in the field.
Kaolinite offers stability, illite provides moderate performance, and montmorillonite presents significant engineering challenges due to its high swelling potential.
For geotechnical engineers, understanding clay mineralogy is essential for designing safe, durable, and economical infrastructure.
Successful construction starts with understanding not only the soil, but also the minerals that control its behavior.
