YOUR BACKGROUND AND PROBLEM STATEMENT ARE NOT THE SAME THING

A common Chapter 1 mistake is writing the BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY and the STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM as if they are two versions of the same section.

They are connected.

But they do different jobs.

The BACKGROUND helps the reader understand the situation surrounding the study.

The PROBLEM STATEMENT explains exactly what is wrong, why it matters and why research is necessary.

Think of it this way:

Background = HOW DID WE GET HERE?

Problem Statement = WHAT EXACTLY IS WRONG HERE?

Let us continue with the example from our previous clinic:

The Influence of TikTok Use on Academic Study Habits among Undergraduate Students at [University]

A background section might gradually establish:

β€’ the growth of social media use among university students
β€’ the increasing role of short-form digital content
β€’ how digital platforms interact with students' study routines
β€’ what previous research has already examined
β€’ what is known in broader contexts
β€’ what remains unclear in the specific study setting

That gives the reader CONTEXT.

But context alone does not prove that a research problem exists.

A weak problem statement may simply say:

❌ β€œSocial media has become popular among university students, and TikTok may affect their studies. Therefore, this study seeks to investigate the influence of TikTok on students.”

The problem?

It tells us the topic.

It does not clearly establish the PROBLEM.

We still do not know:

What undesirable or uncertain situation exists?

Who is affected?

What evidence shows that the issue deserves investigation?

What is already known?

What remains unresolved?

Why does that unresolved issue matter?

A stronger problem statement should move through that logic.

For example:

βœ… "Although TikTok is widely used by undergraduate students, its relationship with students' actual study habits within the selected university remains insufficiently understood. Existing studies may explain social-media use in broader student populations, but they may not show whether TikTok use within this particular setting is associated with changes in study time, concentration, revision routines or other study behaviours. Without context-specific evidence, discussions about TikTok's academic influence remain largely assumptive. The study therefore investigates this relationship among undergraduate students at [University]."

Notice what changed.

The paragraph does not simply announce the topic.

It establishes:

1. The situation
TikTok is being used.

2. The uncertainty
Its relationship with study habits in the selected setting is unclear.

3. The gap
Existing knowledge does not fully answer the specific question.

4. The consequence
Without evidence, conclusions remain uncertain.

5. The research need
The study is therefore justified.

That is what a problem statement is supposed to do.

Your supervisor should not finish reading it and ask:

β€œSo what exactly is the problem?”

Before submitting Chapter 1, test your problem statement with one question:

"If I removed my research title, would a reader still understand exactly why this study needs to be conducted?"

If the answer is no, the problem is probably not yet clear.

YOUR RESEARCH TOPIC IS NOT JUST A TITLE

One of the first mistakes students make is trying to create a topic that *sounds academic* before identifying the actual research problem.

Consider this:

❌ The Impact of Social Media on Students

It sounds like a research topic.

But what exactly is being investigated?

Which social media platforms?

Which students?

Impact on what?

Academic performance?

Mental wellbeing?

Political participation?

Purchasing behaviour?

And in what geographical or institutional context?

A stronger research topic begins when those decisions become clear.

For example:

βœ… The Influence of TikTok Use on Academic Study Habits among Undergraduate Students at [University]

Now the researcher has begun defining:

The phenomenon: TikTok use

The outcome: academic study habits

The population: undergraduate students

The study setting: a specific university

But even that is not enough.

Before committing to the topic, the researcher still needs to establish the problem.

What is happening with students' study habits?

Why is it important?

What evidence suggests that a problem exists?

What has previous research already established?

What remains unclear?

That unanswered part is what starts moving you toward your RESEARCH GAP.

A dissertation topic should therefore not be selected because it sounds impressive.

It should emerge from a problem that can be investigated systematically.

Before approving your topic, ask yourself:

β€œWhat exactly is happening that makes this research necessary?”

If you cannot answer that clearly, your topic probably still needs work.

On 15 May, we said DMB Dissertation Coaching was going to become more active here: not simply to advertise, but to teach.

Now we are putting structure behind that promise.

WELCOME TO THE DMB DISSERTATION CLINIC!!!

From today, we will regularly take apart the problems students actually face during research.

Not generic motivational advice.

Actual dissertation problems.

Why does your supervisor keep saying your problem statement is weak?

What exactly is a research gap?

How do you move from a broad topic to a researchable study?

Why does Chapter 2 become a collection of author summaries instead of a literature review?

How do you justify your sample size?

What exactly should be discussed in Chapter 4?

How do you answer difficult questions during a viva?

We are going to deal with these issues one by one.

Sometimes we will explain.

Sometimes we will show examples.

Sometimes we will critique common mistakes.

And sometimes we will ask you to bring your own research problem to the clinic.

The objective remains the same:

Your work. Your voice. Better structure.

At DMB Dissertation Coaching, good research support should leave you understanding your dissertation better, not becoming dependent on someone else to understand it for you.

Tomorrow, we begin with one of the most important decisions in any dissertation:

Your research topic is not just a title.

Clarity from Complexity, One Word at a Time.

Our focus remains clear:

Your work. Your voice. Better structure.

We believe dissertation support should be ethical, practical and empowering. That means helping students understand their research, strengthen their arguments, improve their writing and prepare confidently for supervision and viva.

From today, expect more useful posts on:
