ASWES

DEWATS stands for „Decentralized Wastewater Treatment System“. DEWATS was developed in 1998 as a demand-based solution to reduce water-pollution by small and medium enterprises and settlements in densely populated areas. Combined with toilets and washing facilities this modular wastewater treatment system is the core element of Community Based Sanitation (CBS) which improves significantly livelihoods and sanitation infrastructure. As a decentralized and low cost solution, DEWATS fills the “gap” between on-site sanitation systems (e.g. absorption pits) and conventional centralized sewerage collection and treatment systems. Today DEWATS is disseminated by public authorities, urban planners, architects and NGOs in Asia and Africa. Its approach and its significant impact for livelihoods and environment is acknowledged by inter-national experts and decision makers. Building on this experience and driven by the aim to up-scale the dissemination of decentralized treatment systems a prefabricated system was developed: prefab-DEWATS. Prefab-DEWATS offers all the benefits and features of the conventional DEWATS and additionally increases effectiveness, mobility and user-friendliness.
