🌍 ”Africa–Europe cooperation in the energy transition should not be about one-way transfer. It should be about learning in both directions.”

In the latest edition of , Prof. ZOUGGAR, Full Professor of Electrical Engineering at Université Mohammed Premier Oujda, Morocco, reflects on what genuine Africa–Europe cooperation can look like in practice.

Drawing on the experience of the EMERGE EU Project Energy System Modelling for Green Development of Africa, he argues that African pilot sites should not be seen simply as places where European tools and methodologies are applied, but as learning environments that can also generate knowledge relevant for Europe.

Within Energy System Modelling for Green Development of Africa , ESEIA - European Sustainable Energy Innovation Alliance coordinates the project’s dissemination and communication activities, helping amplify project results and partner expertise and strengthen their visibility across the Africa–Europe research and innovation community.

| Tyndall National Institute 🇮🇪, ESEIA - European Sustainable Energy Innovation Alliance member, has achieved the SEAI EXEED Certification, Ireland's national recognition for Excellence in Energy Efficient Design.

The results speak for themselves:

✅ 21% reduction in annual energy consumption
✅ 1,101 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent saved per year
✅ 6 years of infrastructure investment in labs & cleanrooms

💡 What makes this especially remarkable: Tyndall operates over 12 GWh of energy annually to power complex research facilities and still chose to put energy reduction first, before implementing any low-carbon technologies.

👏 Congratulations to the Tyndall National Institute team on this important achievement and for demonstrating how research excellence and energy efficiency can go hand in hand!

Research institutions don't just study the energy transition, they can lead it.
