🎃 The VFN Halloween Trick or Treat Map is back!

Looking for places to go trick or treating this Halloween, or happy to welcome little ghosts, witches and monsters at your door? 👻🍬

We’re putting together our community Trick or Treat Map again, and we’d love your help filling it with stops around Vienna. VFN members, friends, family and neighbours are all welcome to take part and add their address.

Not home on Halloween? You can still join by leaving a bowl of treats outside and adding a note when you register.

🔒 The map will only be shared with VFN members and participating third parties, and will be deleted the day after Halloween. Please don’t share the map or its link further.

How do we talk to children about death, loss and grief? 💜

Sometimes these questions come when we least expect them - after losing a grandparent or a pet, hearing something at school, or simply out of curiosity. And as parents, we don't always know what to say, how much to explain or which words to use.

For our October VFN Workshop Series, we're welcoming volunteers from MOMO Kinderpalliativzentrum, our Charity of the Year, to help us approach these difficult conversations with more confidence and understanding.

Together, we'll explore how children understand loss at different ages, what language can help, what to avoid, and which books and resources can support us along the way.

One of the best things about a big community? You can still find your smaller circle. 💜

Maybe it’s parents with children the same age. Families who live a few streets away. Someone you can speak your own language with. Or people who understand a very specific part of what your family is going through.

That’s why VFN has so many different groups.

Some are about where you live, some about the stage your family is in, and others exist because a few people simply have something important in common.

And that’s really the point. You don’t need thousands of people to understand exactly what you’re going through. Sometimes you just need to find a few who do.

💜 Already a VFN member? Have a look through the groups in your Members Area. You might find one you didn’t even know was there.

Some contributions to a community are easy to see. Others happen quietly behind the scenes, through time, effort and simply showing up to help.

For our VFN Flea & Member Business Market, Paolo from Pinned Pizza is doing exactly that.

He prepares his own dough at home, brings the ovens, tables, gas and ingredients, sets everything up on site and spends the day baking fresh pizza for our visitors.

And the best part?

Every euro from the pizza sales goes to charity.

The pizza corner is always one of the busiest spots at the market, with slices disappearing almost as quickly as they come out of the oven.

But behind every slice is a lot of planning, energy and hard work.

This is exactly the kind of community spirit we value at Vienna Family Network. People bringing their time, skills and ideas, and using them to create something that gives back.

Community is built through moments like these.

So when you grab a slice at the market this year, know that you’re not just getting very good pizza.

You’re also supporting a good cause. 🍕💜

What does being a VFN member actually mean? 💜

It means having access to spaces created specifically for our member families. From our Facebook Group and WhatsApp communities to member groups, workshops and events, many parts of VFN are intentionally kept within the membership community.

But what makes VFN special is how much of family life in Vienna this network actually covers.

There are groups for different stages of parenthood, districts across Vienna, languages, interests and shared experiences. Whether you’re looking for families nearby, navigating the school years, hoping to meet people who speak your language or looking for others who understand a particular family situation, there’s a good chance someone within VFN has been there too.

And behind all of this are volunteers. Parents and community members who give their time to organise events, run groups, share information and keep VFN going for other families.

VFN is a non-profit organisation, so membership isn’t about generating profit. The one-time €40 family membership helps cover the costs of running the network and allows us to continue creating these spaces and opportunities for our members.

Giving back is part of our community too. Each year, VFN members choose a Charity of the Year, and any surplus from our fundraising activities goes towards supporting that cause.

That’s the value of VFN membership: a network built over more than 30 years, supported by its members, powered by volunteers and created to help international families find their place in Vienna. 💜

Trying to make sense of Vienna’s secondary education system and the different options available?

This evening will combine an official overview of the education system and school pathways with a dedicated parent panel, sharing real-life experiences from families who have already been through this stage.
