„Able to blind you into a trance and make you dance to your knees, Gris Gris twists, blisters and burns like a fevered dream! […] Shake Stew have forged a fierce reputation for sprawling sets that nod to the '60s spiritual jazz of Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders undercut with Sons of Kemet's interlocking rhythmic fluidity. “
MOJO 4**** (UK)
“Shake Stew rip through their increasingly media-grabbing mix of haunting brass laments, feverish polyphonic folk dances, swarming-bees collective improv and racing drumming on Gris Gris!”
The Guardian (UK)
“Sitting between the realms of spiritual jazz, afrobeat and just utter madness, Shake Stew have forged a herculean record which is utterly scintillating.”
Jazz Revelations

Austrian band Shake Stew has become something of a phenomenon. With their premiere at Jazzfestival Saalfelden 2016 and their following debut “The Golden Fang” they seemingly exploded into the scene out of nowhere. Since then their high energy mixture of hypnotic afrobeat and jazz grooves has made them enormously successful not only on home turf but across Europe. Led by rising star bassist Lukas Kranzelbinder they quickly became one of the hottest live acts on the circuit, while the impact of their second album “Rise and Rise again” (featuring Shabaka Hutchings) enabled them to spread their unique sound further afield, including an extensive tour of Canada, Mexico, Morocco and stand out shows at prestigious festivals like Montreal, Rochester and North Sea Jazz Festival. The band has also attracted the attention of Germany’s leading newspaper Die Zeit who, in an unusual move, sent one of its writers to spend 5 days with them to cover the formations summer residence at Jazzclub Unterfahrt; the resulting feature was euphoric in its praise: "What I heard blew me away. I was glued to my seat and could barely get up. […] Meanwhile I know that other listeners had similar initiation experiences; something comes from this band that is new and special - and very attractive.”
Despite being on the scene for only a short time, German Radio NDR already called them a “Cult Band” and everyone who could witness the septet's two-day residency at Viennese Jazz Club Porgy & Bess earlier this year might understand why: Both evenings sold out, a total of nearly 900 listeners, who crowded into the club to hear the latest sounds of a band whose journey has only just started. Riding on all this success Shake Stew are now preparing to release their third studio album Gris Gris on 1 November. Not content to do anything by halves (their first single was 19 minutes long), Gris Gris is a double album of what they do best: A high-octane mix of fiery jazz and trance-like groove injections combined with mysterious soundscapes and spiritual free jazz eruptions - or as one Austrian newspaper described them “an intergalactic road movie for the ears!”

Today marks the 𝟭𝟬𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝘄. On August 26, 2016 this band was premiered as part of the opening concert of Jazzfestival Saalfelden. Last Saturday we could not have wished for a better way to celebrate than returning to the place where everything began.
For this special occasion we invited the musicians of Bürgermusik Saalfelden and Eisenbahner Stadtkapelle for a unique project: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗸𝗲 - 𝗔 𝗦𝗮𝗮𝗹𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴
Together we performed some of the most famous songs from our repertoire and marched through the city of Saalfelden to celebrate music as the ultimate power of bringing people together across all sorts of backgrounds.
We want to give our heartfelt thanks to Mario Steidl, Daniela Neumayer and the whole team of the festival for giving us the chance to form and premiere Shake Stew ten years ago and for constantly working to create an ideal surrounding for music of all sorts to flourish and evolve.
We also want to thank everyone from the Bürgermusik and Eisenbahnermusi for their dedication and the respect towards our music and this project, as well as Wolfang Schwabl and Andi Wimmer for getting the best out of everyone.
Big shout out to Siegmund Andraschek for arranging our music in the most beautiful way, leading to highly emotional moments along the way.
And last but not least a big thanks to all the musicians who joined us for the legendary rendition of Albert Aylers „Truth is marching in“ in front of the Congress. We will keep this moment with us forever.
Finally we want to take this chance to thank everyone who has supported our band and our music over the years. You are the reason why we keep going and looking back at the last decade its still incredible how lucky we are to be able to surf on the wave of music together with you. ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥

“Of course, why not?” was the common response in our bubble after thousands of people celebrated at the end of our show last Saturday. In reality there were plenty of reasons why this was anything but business as usual. Instrumental jazz bands like ours are rarely booked to perform at festivals like Popfest. If so, it’s mostly at fringe slots or venues. But a headline show on the last day of the festival is incredibly rare.
I have to admit I started to feel my nerves watching Cordoba78 right before us. The crowd was going crazy and the band gave everything. Who on earth had the idea that our music – not only instrumental but with long arcs and extended quiet periods – would be the right act to follow this? And how should I possibly address a crowd that’s been screaming its lungs out for the last hour?
What happened then was pure magic. As soon as we started to play I felt safe, the music leading the way, as always. There was a fascinating period when the audience and we started to “discover” each other. The music was certainly different from what most people expected, but note by note it found its way across the crowd.
As we dove into the fast grooves of “Heat” the energy kept rising. People started to move, getting lost in the hypnotic beats, until everything exploded into a finale of horns, drums and basses.
What followed sent a shiver through my body. The reaction from the crowd confirmed what we also started to feel: you were with us. This was exactly the right place and time for this music.
From then on it became a celebration. A celebration of music as a universal language, connecting people beyond genres and other fictional boundaries. Moments like this are rare, which made this one all the more historic for us.
A big shout out to everyone who boldly booked us into this slot and trusted both us and the audience to be ready for it. And a heartfelt thanks to all of you for your energy, screaming and support that night.
You gave us the confidence to dream even bigger, so we’ve booked an 𝗔𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗮 𝗢𝗽𝗲𝗻-𝗔𝗶𝗿 Show on 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟭𝟮, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟳 – and hopefully we can go on another musical trip with all of you.
Vienna we love you ❤️🔥
