European Trainee Forum for Interventional Radiology
The ETF is a framework for all CIRSE activities related to IR trainees, residents and young IRs.
Launched by CIRSE in 2015, the European Trainee Forum aims to encourage the participation of young physicians in international scientific and educational activities and to create a space within CIRSE to further their careers through networking opportunities.

The second case is a patient who underwent CT after decrease in hemogram and developing shock after undergoing nonselective kidney biopsy.
CT revealed hematoma near left kidney, blood inside urinary bladder and contrast filling of left ureter already present on arterial phase suggesting arterioureteric fistula (AUF). Initial angiogram showed a small leak in lower kidney. and microvascular plug was used to treat this lesion.
The leak is not present anymore on the control angio.
Control CT scan showed just a very small kidney infarction due to embolization and resolution of symptoms.

:
An ice hockey player suffered injury during a match (cross-check hit to his lower back), immediately afterwards he felt unusual pain and within one hour post injury started losing consciousness, after which he was immediately transported to hospital.
revealed massive hematoma in left retroperitoneum with active bleeding and severed left kidney. After the multidisciplinary consultations (interventional radiologist, urologist, surgeon) the treatment plan was decided - the goal was to avoid nephrectomy and preserve as much of functional parenchyma of the kidney as possible. The decision was to perform embolization of the affected artery.
revealed severed artery, and after selective catechization the leak was clearly visible. Liquid embolization using EVOH was chosen.
Thanks to favorable anatomy, this was done within 10 minutes since gaining femoral access. We followed with splenic artery embolzation as there was also a small pseudoaneurysm present.
On the next day the patient felt much better and recovered shortly. After discharge, the patient came for a follow-up after 3 months, and the control CT revealed significant reduction in hematoma volume and small splenic infarct after embolization. Patient had no problems afterwards and got back to active sport in 9 months after injury.

Hello and welcome to the new !
In August, we will focus on emergency interventions! This week will be dedicated to kidneys and emergency pathologies on renal arteries – types of bleeding and different approaches to endovascular treatment.
The cases will be presented by Dr. Jakub Soršák, EBIR from the University Hospital Martin in Slovakia. 🇸🇰

📚 While cancer survival rates continue to improve, pain remains one of the primary drivers of morbidity in advanced oncologic disease.
Optimal pain control requires a multimodal approach - and interventional radiology offers a variety of options that should be integrated alongside standard pharmacologic care rather than used as a last resort.
➡️ Read more in this paper by Bohren et al. published in the CVIR - CardioVascular and Interventional Radiology and learn how interventional techniques fit into a structured, multidisciplinary pain management strategy: https://doi.org/10.1007/s00270-024-03920-9
Understanding the Physiopathology of Pain Pathways for a Practical Approach of Cancer Pain Management - CardioVascular and Interventional Radiology Pain associated with cancer is often the first symptom reported with major repercussions on patient’s quality of life. Mechanical compression, release of algogenic substances by the tumor or the complications of oncologic treatment represent the major causes. Nociceptive and neuropathic pain are b...
