Today, we celebrate and thank our 62 current postdocs for their commitment and the expertise they bring and share at CeMM. 30+ CeMMies conquered the 5 km Vienna Night Run yesterday. 🏃
From fast runners to Nordic walkers, our team showed up with energy and plenty of smiles. Here's to the amazing people who make CeMM special every day! 🫶✨
Moments like these remind us how important it is to connect beyond our work, have fun as a team, and do sports together amid the beautiful night scenery of Vienna's magnificent Ringstrasse.
🎓 First CeMM PhD graduate in September! Congratulations to Jiří Reiniš, from CeMM PI Stefan Kubicek’s group, who successfully defended his PhD thesis today, entitled “Computational discovery of bioactive compounds from imaging of pooled multicolor-tagged live cells”.
In his PhD, Jiří has combined a novel method for fluorescent labeling of proteins with high-content microscopy to develop a platform for screening for chemical compounds that change the subcellular localization of proteins.
We are proud of you, Jiří! Congratulations from all your colleagues and friends at CeMM! 🎉👏
A familiar face is back at CeMM! 👋🧬
We were delighted to welcome CeMM alumna Sara Sdelci back for a CeMM Alumni Seminar. Sara was a postdoc in the Kubicek Lab at CeMM and now leads her own research group at CRG Barcelona, where she investigates the fascinating connections between chromatin, metabolism and cancer.
While she was here, we caught up with Sara to hear her advice for the next generation of cancer researchers, and the habits she took with her from her time at CeMM 😊

Solute carrier membrane transporters (SLCs) are already established targets for CNS drugs, while changes in many others have been linked to neurological disorders such as epilepsy, neurodegeneration, and autism spectrum condition.
A new Review in 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘙𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸𝘴 𝘋𝘳𝘶𝘨 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺, led by CeMM and Cori (both Österreichische Akademie der Wissenschaften institutes) Founding Director and CeMM Adjunct PI Giulio Superti-Furga, together with researchers from his lab and Solgate, a startup founded in collaboration between CeMM and Institute of Science and Technology Austria - ISTA, explores recent advances in SLC biology and how targeting these transporters could help shape the next generation of CNS drug discovery.

A small change in a molecule can make a big difference in how it behaves in the body. A new study published in 𝘈𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘵𝘦 𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘦 and led by CeMM Adjunct PI Nuno Maulide and researchers at CeMM, Universität Wien, and Medizinische Universität Wien, introduces a simple and versatile method to produce "aminocyclopropanes", tiny triangular structures with promising applications in drug discovery.
The new method makes it easier to introduce these structures into complex molecules, giving scientists a new tool to fine-tune potential drugs and explore how small structural changes can influence their biological effects.

When are you visiting us? ✨
We were happy to host the AITHYRA Life Sciences School at CeMM on 27 August 2026, welcoming 25 outstanding Ukrainian high school students with a passion for chemistry, biology, and medicine.
The AITHYRA Life Sciences School brought talented young scientists from Ukraine to Vienna for a week of encounters with researchers and research institutions. At CeMM, the students, all prize winners of national or international science competitions, explored our research through tours of the Chemical Screening, Metabolomics, and Biomedical Sequencing facilities, conversations with our scientists, and a tour of the medical campus led by CeMM PI Christoph Bock followed by a visit to the Josephinum.
A big thank you to Wolfgang Däuble, the BSF and MDP teams, Christoph Bock, Dmytro Rzhemovskyi from the Universität Wien, and everyone at CeMM who contributed to the visit, and of course to the students for their curiosity and enthusiasm!

🎓 Congratulations to Felix Kartnig, from the group of Giulio Superti-Furga (CeMM PI and founding Director), who successfully defended his PhD thesis today, entitled “High-content imaging–based functional precision medicine in rheumatoid arthritis”.
Felix’s PhD project focused on developing a microscopy-based approach to help identify the most effective treatment for individual patients with rheumatoid arthritis. His research showed that high-content imaging can capture how immune cells from patients respond to different drugs and identify cellular features linked to treatment response. The findings highlight the potential of functional precision medicine to move rheumatoid arthritis treatment beyond trial and error.
Felix’s work was successfully carried out at the Medizinische Universität Wien and CeMM.

Meet Tatyana, a lab technician in the research group of CeMM Adjunct PI Georg Busslinger. Using gut organoids and other cutting-edge technologies, the team explores how the cells lining our gastrointestinal tract (from the esophagus and stomach to the small intestine) develop and function.
Follow Tatyana through a typical day in the lab at Medizinische Universität Wien, where you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at her work with organoids, microscopes, scanners, and the many steps that make biomedical research possible.
