Moving from challenge of urban heat islands to cool urban solutions.
Cities create their own heat. 🌆🌡️
The urban heat island effect is a feature of a city’s microclimate, present year-round but most visible in summer and at night. Built surfaces such as asphalt and concrete absorb and store heat during the day, then release it slowly after sunset.
As a result, urban areas can remain several degrees warmer than surrounding rural areas at night, even when daytime differences are modest.
As climate change drives higher baseline temperatures, urban heating is becoming more pressing. People living in cities are more exposed to heat stress and related health risks, especially at night when the body needs cooler temperatures to recover.
Designing cooler, greener and more inclusive cities is now a public health priority.🏙️
