Voting is one of our fundamental rights as U.S. citizens. Members of the military, their families, and private U.S. citizens residing outside the United States can choose to exercise that right — from anywhere in the world. Register to vote and request your ballot at fvap.gov.

🇺🇸🛂 Passport PSA for U.S. Dual Nationals: U.S. citizens are REQUIRED to enter and depart the United States on a U.S. passport. This requirement applies equally to U.S. citizens, including children, who are dual nationals. Dual national U.S. citizens may NOT use their foreign passport to apply for an electronic travel authorization (ESTA). The Department of Homeland Security routinely denies or cancels ESTAs for dual national U.S. citizens. If you are a U.S. citizen or national and live abroad and plan to travel to the United States, make sure you do so with a valid U.S. passport. If your U.S. passport is expired or expires soon, renew before your trip! Passports should generally be valid at least six months after the date of entry to a foreign country.



Requirements for U.S. citizens holding dual nationality:

✅You must enter and leave the United States on your U.S. passport. You are not allowed to enter the United States on your foreign passport based on U.S. law.

✅ U.S. citizens are not eligible for a U.S. visa or ESTA.

✅ If your child is a citizen of the United States, he or she is not eligible for a U.S. visa. This is true even if you have not taken steps to document your child as a U.S. citizen. If you want to enter or leave the United States with your U.S. citizen child, you must obtain a U.S. passport for the child.

✅ As a U.S. citizen, you are obligated to comply with U.S. tax laws. You may want to consult a tax advisor experienced in filing taxes for dual nationals.

🇺🇸🛂🇦🇹 Wondering if your ESTA is still valid for travel to the United States? You can check the status of your ESTA authorization at esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Always check the status of your ESTA before booking travel.

If you’re not eligible to travel to the United States through the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) due to your travel history, a previous ESTA refusal, or not meeting the program requirements, you can apply for a U.S. visitor visa instead. 🇺🇸🪖🇦🇹 From July 5 to 11, soldiers from the Vermont Army National Guard's 1st Squadron, 172nd Cavalry Regiment traveled to Austria to exchange reconnaissance tactics and procedures with the Austrian Armed Forces at the Theresian Military Academy.

U.S. soldiers joined 26 Austrian reconnaissance students for a hands-on exchange featuring an equipment display, a terrain walk, and a live computer-assisted training exercise. The visit strengthened interoperability and deepened the partnership between Vermont and Austria.

The Visa Waiver Program allows qualified Austrian nationals to go to the United States for up to 90 days without a visa. It’s important to know what you can and CANNOT do an on ESTA.
