28+ years manufacturing innovative products dedicated to enhancing the quality of life.

Entrepreneur Bernadette Eriksen is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Flavour Creations, a Brisbane-based $20 million food manufacturing company that researches and develops innovative dysphagia and nutrition products intended to support a healthy lifestyle and improve the lives of thousands living with dysphagia. Flavour Creations supplies to hospitals, residential aged care facilities and directly to consumers living in the community - both in Australia and internationally. What started out as an idea on Bernadette’s kitchen bench in the late 1990’s has become an international success story, after she discovered a gap in the market for providing food and drink solutions that not only taste great but offer maximum nutritional density and enhance quality of life. Flavour Creations is now recognised as a global leader for innovation in the industry, producing more than 100,000 cups of pre-thickened liquid per day alongside a growing range of targeted food first nutritional solutions, employing over 100 staff locally and restoring dignity and independence to thousands of people all over the world. Bernadette was named a Finalist in the Innovation & Technology category at the recent 2016 Brisbane Region Women in Business Awards. She has also been shortlisted in the Commonwealth Bank Business Owner Award, the Nokia Innovation Award and was a finalist in two categories of the 2009 Telstra Business Women’s Awards.

On World Alzheimer’s Day, we’re recognising the role nutrition can play in wound prevention and healing for people living with Alzheimer’s.

As Alzheimer’s progresses, changes in appetite, swallowing, mobility and communication can make it harder to eat and drink well.

Good nutrition supports skin health and the body’s ability to heal, making it an important consideration for people at risk of skin tears, pressure injuries and wounds.

Supporting nutritional needs is one part of providing care that protects health, comfort and dignity.

Is nutrition being overlooked in wound care?

Nutrition plays an important role in wound healing, yet malnutrition remains an often under-recognised and modifiable risk factor for chronic and slow-to-heal wounds.

When the body doesn’t receive enough energy, protein and essential nutrients, it may not have the nutrients needed to support tissue repair and recovery.

Screening for malnutrition risk and referring for appropriate nutrition assessment can help ensure nutritional needs are identified and addressed as part of comprehensive wound care.

Because wound care is about more than the wound. It’s about the whole person.
