SA vehicle sales are shifting — and EVs are making some serious moves.
The latest South Australian registration figures show some significant changes compared with the same month last year.
Toyota remains comfortably on top with 1,601 vehicles, up 5.1%, while several established brands have gone backwards — including Ford -40.1%, Mitsubishi -47.0%, Kia -10.6% and Hyundai -10.2%.
But the standout is the growth coming from electrified brands.
Tesla jumped from just 15 registrations to 341 — an increase of 2,173%.
BYD increased from 184 to 496 — up 169.6%.
It’s worth noting that BYD now sells both fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, so its 496 registrations aren't all pure EVs. Even so, the change in the market is difficult to ignore, and anecdotally KIA are selling something like 30% EVs each month.
However, spot 11 is taken by Geely who sold 28 last year and 222 this year, with Zeekr selling 139 in 15th place and Jaecoo selling 129 in 17th place.
For buyers, this also means the used-car market will increasingly contain EVs from a much wider range of manufacturers — making battery health, charging performance, diagnostic checks and vehicle history increasingly important parts of a pre-purchase inspection.
The Australian vehicle market is changing quickly. Verify what you're buying, and make sure you get a prepurchase EV inspection and include an EV battery test powered by Aviloo Battery Diagnostics before you commit to the final sale.

$4500 Aussie Dollar Bucks paid, and the vehicle still doesn't run. The invoice says: Unfortunately was unable to get the vehicle started with our level of knowledge regarding what to do further after all fuel components have been replaced."
For a start, I would suggest not sending a bill. Then pack up your tools and find another trade. Especially as the actual fix was a $200 part with $250 diagnosis fee.
But what can we learn from this? Seeing stamps in a service log book only tells you half the story. When buying a vehicle you should ask to see the last few invoices and check for work that's been done and any service notes for recommendations. When people sell vehicles they often avoid expensive repairs and leave it to the next person.
You could also find a history of unresolved issues too. When you buy a used vehicle it is a risk, so minimise the risk by getting a prepurchase inspection and asking for any service history for the vehicle.
That's not a tow vehicle, this is a tow vehicle!!! You make sure it can tow what you want, we check it out so you can know the true condition before you buy it.... your welcome!!

Do you know why some cars have one panel that looks a different colour to the rest of the vehicle?
One possible reason is previous paintwork — and that’s why we carry out a paint depth report on all of our Premium Inspections.
We measure paint thickness across the vehicle, looking for panels that differ from the surrounding factory paintwork.
Why does it matter?
Sometimes cars get a few “love taps”, and the resulting damage means a panel needs to be repaired and repainted. Even when the colour match looks good initially, repaired paint can age or fade differently to the original factory finish, sometimes leaving a noticeable colour mismatch later on.
Our paint depth report can help identify previously repainted panels, as well as areas where excessive body filler may have been used — particularly important when repairs involve structural areas of the vehicle.
It’s another piece of information that helps us understand what has happened to the vehicle before you buy it.
