FROM BERLIN TO ADELAIDE IN 1849

On Tuesday, 22 September, we gathered at the Coopers Alehouse to learn about the fascinating history of German settlers in South Australia.

Presented by the award-winning Samuel Doering - Historian, the evening explored how the revolutionary movements that swept across Germany and Europe in the late 1840s inspired many middle-class Germans to take the courageous step of emigrating to South Australia in search of a new life. This was distinct from the well-known story of Prussian emigrants who fled Germany largely as a result of religious persecution.

A special thank you to Samuel for an excellent and engaging lecture, filled with fascinating facts, historical insights and plenty of humour. It was wonderful to learn more about the significant contributions these German settlers made to the development of South Australia.

DIE GESCHICHTE DES BIERES - THE HISTORY OF BEERS AT THE PONY

Ever wondered what happens behind the scenes at a brewery – or how 10,000 years of b**r history fit into one evening?

Our guests at Prancing Pony Brewery got to find out!

With the venue opened especially for this Adelaide German Week collaboration, we explored the brewing tanks, watched the packaging process up close and then settled in as Frank took us on a fascinating journey through 10,000 Years of B**r - Die Geschichte des Bieres.

Add Prancing Pony b**rs, a shared German-style Schlachtplatte and a room full of people enjoying the evening together… and you have one of those special AGW experiences that are about much more than simply attending an event.

A huge Dankeschön to everyone who joined us and made the evening what it was. And ein ganz herzliches Dankeschön to Corinna, Frank and the Prancing Pony team for opening your doors especially for us and making us feel so welcome.

If you missed this one, we hope we’ll see you at one of our next Adelaide German Week experiences!

BAROSSA KONZERT

As part of the Barossa German Language Association’s contribution to Adelaide German Week 2026, we enjoyed a delightful afternoon of music, culture and German hospitality in the Barossa Valley on Sunday, 20 September.

Held at the Nuriootpa Soldiers Memorial Hall, the concert featured The Barossa Trio - Sarah Afshin-Pour (piano), Greg Pfeiffer (Baroque flute) and Shae Heinrich (cello) - alongside the Kapunda-based KaDenCe Choir, conducted by Elizabeth Falbusch and accompanied on piano by David Garwood.

The program offered a wonderful blend of classic German repertoire performed by The Barossa Trio, alongside a diverse selection of music from the KaDenCe Choir, spanning different genres and including songs from musicals and even a Neil Diamond medley.

The two programs complemented each other beautifully, culminating in a special collaborative performance. Sarah Afshin-Pour accompanied Annalise Nitschke’s solo rendition of Franz Schubert’s 'Du bist die Ruhe' (You Are the Rest), providing a beautiful finale to the concert.

The afternoon concluded with traditional Barossa German hospitality: w**e, cheese and plenty of opportunity to mingle, connect and network with fellow guests.

This wonderful event would not have been possible without the generous support of The Barossa Council, Langmeil Winery, Ashton Hurn MP, Member for Schubert and Leader of the Opposition, Gully Gardens Barossa, and The Barossa Cheese Company.

A very big thank you to Steffi and Gerlinde from the BGLA for organising such a memorable event, and to Blumenfeld Flowers and Ngeringa Vineyard for their generous donation of wonderful gifts.

Vielen Dank to everyone who joined us and helped make the Barossa Konzert such a special part of Adelaide German Week 2026! 🇩🇪🎶🍷🧀

OKTOBERFEST AT BRIGHTSTAR BREWING

What a beautiful sunny day for celebrating Oktoberfest!

On Saturday 19 September, Brightstar Brewing was filled with music, laughter and plenty of German spirit as Adelaide German Week celebrated Oktoberfest in true Bavarian style.

From bell ringing and Schuhplattler with Reinhard from the Bund der Bayern to the always entertaining Maßkrugstemmen, there was no shortage of fun, tradition and friendly competition throughout the day.

Add great b**r, wonderful company and a perfect spring afternoon, and we had all the ingredients for a fantastic Oktoberfest celebration.

A big thank you to Brightstar Brewing, all performers, participants and everyone who came along and helped create such a welcoming atmosphere.

Prost to sunshine, community and a little piece of Bavaria in Adelaide!

THE STORY OF JURLIQUE

What a beautiful morning we shared at the Jurlique Farm as part of Adelaide German Week 2026.

Surrounded by the colours and scents of the Adelaide Hills, our guests explored the farm, learned about Jurlique’s biodynamic approach and even had the opportunity to hand-pick delicate violets – a wonderful way to experience firsthand where the Jurlique story begins.

But what made the day particularly special were the stories.

Cherie Hutchinson, tourism and farm manager, shared her own connection to the area, having grown up near the very farm where she now works, and spoke warmly about Ulrike Klein, who together with her husband Dr Jürgen Klein founded Jurlique in the Adelaide Hills. Cherie spoke about the enormous respect she has for Ulrike and how much she learned from her over the years – knowledge, values and a deep respect for the plants and the land.

In the garden, Cherie also took us through some of the Jurlique products she personally loves and explained how to use them correctly as part of a skincare routine:

Nourishing Cleansing Oil
Activating Water Essence+
Rare Rose Serum
Calendula Cream

Her practical demonstration gave us a fascinating insight into the journey from the botanicals growing around us to the finished skincare products.

And, of course, no Adelaide German Week gathering would be complete without a little German hospitality. We finished with Jurliques‘s Herbal Tea and authentic German cake, homemade especially for the occasion by our AGW Chair.

A morning of nature, knowledge, personal stories and connections – and a wonderful opportunity to discover the German roots behind one of South Australia’s most internationally recognised brands.

A heartfelt thank you to Cherie and the Jurlique team for welcoming us so warmly and sharing not only the farm, but also the stories and knowledge behind it.

We are proud to share that Samuel Doering, a member of the Adelaide German Week Committee, was invited to the State Reception at Adelaide Oval to thank and farewell Her Excellency, the Honourable Frances Adamson AC 💫

Samuel continues to inspire others as he shares his knowledge of South Australian history, including at last night’s Adelaide German Week event. 🇩🇪

Gratuliere, Samuel! 🤗

On Monday night, I had the immense privilege of attending the State Reception at Adelaide Oval to honour, thank and farewell Her Excellency, the Honourable Frances Adamson AC, and Mr Rod Bunten.

Held in the William Magarey Room, the reception brought together hundreds of community, business, education, defence and cultural leaders from across South Australia to recognise the Governor’s remarkable five years of service.

Jack Buckskin gave a very warm Welcome to Country, before Premier Peter Malinauskas and Opposition Leader Ashton Hurn paid tribute to Her Excellency’s extraordinary, and lifelong contribution to the Australian public service and to South Australia.

Her Excellency reflected on some of the memorable achievements of her five years as Governor - from visiting parts of South Australia never before visited by a Governor, to opening Government House to a broader cross-section of the community, and championing civics, reconciliation, leadership and education.

It was a truly memorable evening, and an honour to speak with Her Excellency and thank her for her service. I'll never forget when Eudunda hosted Her Excellency in 2021 to open the 150th anniversary celebrations in what was her first regional engagement.

I was also pretty chuffed to meet the Premier, share a little of my background and various involvements, briefly explain my PhD research, and discuss the proposed AI data centre at Bundey.

A wonderful evening, and fitting reception to thank Her Excellency for five extraordinary years of service to our state.
