Mobile Language Team

Recently, the MLT’s Celena Aardenburg was a guest lecturer in a Community and Culture class for CASM (the Centre for Aboriginal Studies in Music). The MLT and CASM have a longstanding relationship with multiple collaborations between the two centres, with MLT having been invited to guest lecture for CASM in previous years.

In the lecture, Celena discussed her cultural and language experience as a Nedut’en woman from British Columbia, Canada, growing up Indigenous away from her nation while still keeping a cultural connection, and the challenges that come with it. Celena has built her cultural identity through her life experiences and uses this to help support the work she does in communities across South Australia for the MLT.

In August, the MLT travelled to Oodnadatta to support a community-based workshop at the Dunjiba Women’s Shed, bringing together local women to record stories about their lives, families and experiences in Oodnadatta, told entirely in Yankunytjatjara, which will contribute to the development of new language-learning resources for students at Oodnadatta Aboriginal School.

Today is National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day, and this year’s theme “Living Our Truth” - honouring truth-telling, sharing knowledge across generations, and recognising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children as future leaders.

Through the First Nations Languages Education Program (FNLEP), the MLT is proudly working alongside community members and schools to support children in learning, using and celebrating Aboriginal languages.
