Top 11 things I learnt racing in Belgium 🇧🇪
1. The races have a large number of competitors so you will learn heaps on bunch positioning (after getting over the nerves of being in a bunch that large).
2. It can be very physical, riders bumping and physically touching you during the race - it’s part of racing.
3. There can be a lot of yelling in the race and usually in a different language.
4. Riders go to the start line early, because the numbers are so large, warm up earlier and go to start line earlier to get a front position.
5. Crashes happen in nearly every race but typically at the back/middle of the group or on final laps - get to the front, less chance of getting caught up in a fall.
6. U17 races are usually with U19 and because of rollout differences, it is sometimes hard to stay in the group. Riders are pulled from the race if they are dropped. Try and stay in the bunch and not at the back of the bunch, less likely to be dropped.
7. Big bunches mean positioning is everything
8. Don’t get intimidated on start line - you deserve to be there!
9. Every race is an opportunity to learn something different.
10. Racing is on different surfaces - cobblestones are the trickiest - I used 30mm Maxxis High Road tyres rather than the usual 28mm - more stability and cushioning.
11. Before and after each race - clean and look after your bike, if you get a mechanical, you’re out of the race- for an U17 there are no support vehicles.
Hope this helps - let me know if you have other questions 🤙
Belgium was brilliant.
None of this would be possible without the support of a bunch of people and very cool brands that I love - really like to thank you for helping me with my cycling…
