“That Rotten Volvo”!

The latest arrival at the National Motor Racing Museum is the Volvo 242 GT driven by Spencer Martin and David McKay in the 1979 Hardie-Ferodo 1000!

Widely considered to be the last almost stock car to compete in the Great Race, the team took a car straight from the showroom floor at Scuderia Veloce Motors, and after some preparation to meet racing regulations, ran the car in Class B, eventually finishing fifth in class, and 20th overall! Competing on standard Uniroyal Steel Cat road tyres, the car changed only one tyre after a racing incident, and was running lap times around 2 minutes and 58 seconds.

After a period as a road car, the car returned to the track in May 2015, and we thank the car’s owners for loaning it for display!

Brock’s Round Australia Commodore - 90s Style!

On show in our brand new Peter Brock: King of the Mountain Special Exhibition is this VR Commodore, the test and development car from Holden’s factory effort in the 1995 Mobil 1 Round Australia Trial. Built by George Shepheard, the cars were tested for thousands of kilometres to ensure they were tough enough to complete this gruelling event, and Peter Brock did much of the development work in the car on display.

Although he would not repeat his success from the 1979 Repco Trial, team mate Ed Ordynski took the victory in his factory Commodore, with Brock finishing in 31st place.

Check out our Peter Brock Special Exhibition next time you’re at Mount Panorama! The National Motor Racing Museum is open daily from 9am to 4:30pm, closed on Tuesdays, and the exhibition will run through to the end of the Christmas School Holidays.
