Australian recruiters are not dismissing your overseas work. They just cannot picture it yet. Your job is to make it easy for them.

Stop listing responsibilities. Start showing outcomes. "Managed a team" tells them nothing. "Led a three-person team that shipped a payment integration two weeks early" tells them everything.

Remove company names that need context. If an Australian employer has never heard of your previous company, they will not pause to look it up. Use the industry or sector instead. "At a major Indian fintech" lands better than a name nobody recognises.

Add scale. Numbers travel across borders. "Supported 200 concurrent users" works in any country.

Three changes. Measurable difference.

Indus Institute students get resume coaching built into the program.

Microsoft. Google. Amazon. Meta. Nearly 30 years across all four. That's the career Amit Chopra opened up to our community earlier this month.

Close to 250 participants from Indus Institute joined "A Tech Career in the Age of AI" for a two hour deep dive into how Big Tech really works, how AI is reshaping tech careers, and the fundamentals that matter no matter where your career takes you.

The Q&A session ran well past the clock. People had real questions, and Amit gave real, grounded answers from someone who has actually lived it.

Thank you to everyone who joined, and to Amit for sharing so generously.

More sessions like this are on the way.

"Tell me about a time you dealt with a difficult situation at work." Most candidates freeze here, not because they lack the experience, but because they don't know how to structure the answer.

STAR gives you the structure. Situation: set the scene in one or two sentences. Task: what were you actually responsible for. Action: what you specifically did, not what the team did. Result: what happened, ideally with a number or outcome attached.

The part people skip most is Action. It's tempting to say "we" the whole way through. Interviewers are listening for "I." They want to know what you did, not what your group did around you.

Prepare three or four stories before the interview, not scripted word for word, just the shape of them. Then you can adapt them to whatever question comes up.

Indus Institute students practise this exact format before every internship interview, with real feedback on what's landing and what isn't.

Asking for feedback feels risky. What if the answer isn't good?

Here's the thing: your supervisor is already forming an opinion of your work. Asking just means you get to hear it early enough to do something about it.

Skip the vague version. "How am I doing?" gets a vague answer. Ask something specific instead. "Is there anything in how I'm approaching this task I should adjust?" gives them something real to respond to.

Timing matters too. Don't ask in the middle of a deadline crunch. Catch a quiet moment, or ask for five minutes later in the week.

When the feedback comes, resist the urge to explain or defend. Just listen, say thanks, and actually use it. That's what makes someone ask you again next time.

Indus Institute students get structured feedback built into every stage of their internship, so this becomes a habit long before it becomes a job requirement.

Everyone makes a mistake in their first months on the job. What happens next is what people actually remember.

Don't go quiet and hope nobody notices. In an Australian workplace, silence reads worse than the error. Flag it early, before it becomes someone else's problem to find.

Skip the long explanation. "I got this wrong; here's what I'm doing to fix it" lands better than five minutes of context nobody asked for.

Bring a fix, not just a confession. Even a rough plan shows you're thinking past the problem.

Then actually let it go. Managers remember how you handled it, not that it happened.

Indus Institute students practise exactly this during their internship, in a real workplace, with real feedback, before it counts against them.
