Bigger isn’t always better when it comes to choosing a fuel pump. 👀

11mm, 12mm, 200HP, 230HP, 270HP, 300HP… the right pump comes down to your setup and what you actually want to do with it.

Towing a 3-tonne van around Australia? Your needs are going to be very different to someone chasing 270+HP out of their TD.

And it’s not as simple as bolting on a bigger pump and hoping for the best. Turbo, injectors, fuel system and supporting parts all need to work together.

Not sure what combination suits your build? Hit us up and we’ll point you in the right direction. 🤙

Tools down for the King’s Birthday public holiday. 🔧

The Performance 4x4 workshop is closed today, but we’ll be back on the tools and back to normal tomorrow.

Enjoy the day off, legends! 🤙

Wondering if your injectors are worth a closer look?

There's no single answer, because it depends on what you're driving, what's already been done to it and what you want it to do. A tow rig, a daily and a tourer can all be asking for different things.

Send us the details and we'll talk through the options with you.

Modifying pumps, It's usually more involved than people expect.

Done in house, it starts with stripping the pump right down, then a meticulous clean. From there it can include machining specific parts, which is where a lathe and mill on site come in.

The exact work depends on the pump and what you want from it.

Before you commit to a pump upgrade, you can reach out and ask the team what the best options for you are!🫡

Most of what a 4x4 tells you, it tells you from underneath. Leaks, tired bushes, surface rust: what's the last thing you spotted down there? Worth a look every so often, especially after rough tracks or big trips.

Half of diesel diagnosis is just ruling things out in the right order. 🔧

A rig comes in down on power or blowing a bit of smoke and the owner's already been told it's the injectors. Might be. Might also be a tired pump, a boost leak, a blocked filter or a sensor telling the ECU a story that isn't true there is plenty that could be causing issues.

So we start under the bonnet with data, not guesses. Sort out what the motor's actually doing before anyone spends money on parts.🫡

Bench full of pump housings and every one of them's off a different motor. 🔧

Strip enough of these and you can almost read them. Some come in worn out from honest kilometres, some have been fiddled with by someone who shouldn't have, and a few look brand new inside because they barely got driven.

What they all have in common is nobody notices a pump until it stops delivering.

350HP. 891Nm. Six-speed AB60. 🔥

We’ve wrapped up Max from Hyperfab FTE Patrol with its AB60 six-speed conversion.

After plenty of R&D, dyno time and getting the engine and transmission working together, this thing drives seriously well.

Toyota engine. Toyota gearbox. Nissan cab. You can’t have it all. 😂

Old school Hilux diesel on the dyno this one is tuned with spanners, not a laptop. 🔧

Fuelling is adjusted at the mechanical injection pump, while boost is set through the turbo control. Each change is followed by another dyno run to check power, torque, boost, exhaust temperature and smoke.

It takes patience, but when the fuel and air are properly matched, these old Hiluxes can deliver good results.
