Earworx is a dedicated professional earwax removal service. Some people have more of a problem with wax build-up than others. Why see us?

Using dry and effective micro-suction technology under direct observation, wax is gently and safely removed by a qualified nurse. Excessive or impacted cerumen is present in one in 10 children, one in 20 adults, and more than one-third of the geriatric and developmentally delayed populations. Ear wax removal is a delicate process and special training is required to perform this procedure. Earworx is a service that proudly employs only registered nurses who are qualified in the process of Micro Suction and Aural Hygiene. Ear wax removal is our core business - it is what we do best! Symptoms associated with wax impaction can include but are not limited to:

- Hearing loss
- Tinnitus
- Feeling of fullness
- Itching
- Pain
- Discharge
- Odour
- Cough

If you fit the criteria above or have any of the associated symptoms you should consider having your ears looked at to exclude wax impaction.

Types of Ear Wax [An Earworx 7-part series]

6. Runny or Liquid

Wet and sticky? Dry and flaky? Dark and firm? Not all earwax is the same, and the type you have can change how blocked your ears feel. Softer wax clings to the ear canal and holds on to moisture and debris, making that muffled feeling more noticeable. Wax that sits for longer tends to darken and firm up. Also, cotton buds can push any of it deeper.

How long does earwax removal take?

Here’s a quick rundown of what actually happens at an Earworx appointment, for anyone who has not been before.⠀
⠀
It starts with a few questions about ear history and current symptoms. A speculum is then inserted to examine the ear canal and eardrum using loupes, which are binocular glasses, with magnification, fitted with a light. If there is enough wax present to obscure the view of the eardrum, removal is recommended and the procedure is explained first, with a chance to ask questions.⠀
⠀
Wax can then be removed by Registered Nurses using microsuction, curettes, fine forceps and is water free.

Is your hearing aid screaming at you? Don’t forget to check your ears.

Sandy is a Registered Nurse with Earworx. Today she discusses earwax accumulation in the ear canal, and how wearing a hearing aid can make that buildup more noticeable. That does not mean wax is always the cause. It simply means an ear examination can be a useful part of working out what has changed.

If your hearing aid doesn’t seem to be working quite like it used to, it may be worth getting your ears checked.

Would you look at the size of that earwax plug?

Wax presents differently in every ear. Some is soft and honey-coloured, some is dark and firm, and occasionally it consolidates into a plug like this one. Size is not a measure of how well someone looks after their ears. It reflects the shape of the canal, the type of wax produced and how long it has been sitting there.

🎮 It’s

Long sessions in a headset or earbuds keep the ear canal warm and humid, and in-ear devices can interfere with the way the canal clears wax on its own. Some people notice a blocked feeling or muffled hearing after heavy use.

Break between sessions, wipe devices down regularly and keep volume moderate.

If your ears feel blocked or muffled call 1800 327 967 for an appointment with a registered nurse.

MYTH: "But I clean my ears all the time. How can I have that much wax?"
FACT: Earwax is not a sign of dirty ears. It is a normal part of how ears protect themselves.

Sandy, Earworx RN, hears this one often. The trouble can start when cleaning goes too far in, because cotton buds, fingers and other objects can push wax deeper and can make that blocked feeling worse.

Used ear drops and your ears still feel blocked?

Drops are designed to soften cerumen. Depending on how firm or how deeply seated the wax is, softening alone may not change how the ear feels. Microsuction is a removal method performed by Registered Nurses under direct vision, without water.

5. Blood Tinged

Blood in your ear wax is always worth taking seriously. It can point to a scratched ear canal, a small cut in the outer ear, or in some cases more significant trauma. Whatever the cause, blood in or around the ear is a signal to have things checked by a healthcare professional rather than attempting to investigate or manage it at home.

Wax like this does not build up overnight. It accumulates gradually, and most people are not aware of how much is there until the canal is viewed under magnification.⠀
⠀
Not everyone needs their ears cleaned. Ears manage wax on their own most of the time. But if yours feel blocked, or sound muffled, or you have noticed a change, an examination is a reasonable next step.⠀

Just a quick reminder that cotton buds tend to push wax further in where it compacts and becomes harder to shift. Ears are self-cleaning. In most instances, wax migrates outward on its own via a migrating skin layer.
