REF Environmental
REF's vision is to raise awareness of the environment, the flora and fauna in the Moreton Bay Region
The key strategic objectives of the REF have been developed around three core focuses: Rehabilitation, Education, and Facilitation:
- To lead and participate in environmental rehabilitation initiatives in the region
- To educate the community on matters that have or may have an adverse environmental impact in the region
- Facilitate consultation and community engagement on matters of an environmentally sensitive nature

The Eastern Koels (also known as the Pacific Koel or storm bird) have returned to our region. They migrate from Papua New Guinea and Indonesia to northern and eastern Australia around September each year to breed, returning north in winter. Being a cuckoo, they are a brood parasite and lay their eggs in the nest of others to hatch and raise their young.
I photographed the female earlier this week and the male this morning, in the same pine tree they have used as a vantage point for a few years to call out to each other.

What an informative and entertaining presentation from Dr Jack Hill at the Deception Bay Environmental Hub last night! Jack gave an overview of mangroves, their adaptations to survive in soft mud and capacity to deal with rising sea levels. The audience was also treated to an online presentation from Professor Lovelock, who was in Canada for an international conference on Blue Carbon.
Looking forward to this evening's presentation. A great opportunity to learn more about our local mangroves as well as the potential impact from climate change. Guest speakers are researchers, Dr Jack Hill and Professor Catherine Lovelock from UQ. https://www.facebook.com/share/1C4NzEwHiq/

Our Bird Survey Team conducted the quarterly survey at Hays Inlet. Incredibly 74 species were observed including large flocks of recently returned migratory waders such as Bar-tailed Godwits, Sharp-tailed Sandpipers and the Far Eastern Curlew. These surveys become more important as they allow us to monitor the health of the wildlife in Hays Inlet as well as collect long-term data. Great to see a young koala on the site as well.
Very cute, Red-necked Wallaby Joey! Last week headed to Girraween National Park to check out the wildlife. Amazing time, birds, kangaroos and heaps of wallabies!
It's always a great day when you get a chance to help out at our amazing Bushcare site at Hays Inlet. Our team of volunteers worked on removing ground weeds at the rehabilitation site at Silcock Street Reserve. Originally a weed-infested paddock, these days it's an amazing habitat for kangaroos, koalas, possums and many species of birds. A big thank you to our amazing volunteers!

Not quite as famous as George and Hope of Osprey House Wildlife at Osprey House! But we've been watching our own pair of Hays Inlet Ospreys for many years now. This year they have started a new nest (eyrie) on the lights at Rae Frawley Fields. Perhaps they enjoy watching rugby union as well as keeping an eye out on the Bay?
