Ever wondered what happens during an ear consult?
When your pet has itchy, sore or smelly ears, we may take a sample from the ear and examine it under the microscope to help identify whatโ€™s causing the problem.
*One of the common culprits we can find is ear mites โ€” tiny parasites that can cause:
โ€ข Excessive scratching
โ€ข Head shaking
โ€ข Dark, waxy ear discharge
โ€ข Redness and inflammation
โ€ข Sore or irritated ears

Finding the cause is an important part of choosing the right treatment and getting those ears comfortable again.

๐Ÿ“… Appointments are available Monday with Dr Jules

๐Ÿ–๏ธ๐Ÿถ BEACH DAYS & DOG EAR PROBLEMS
Summer means beach adventures, swimming and plenty of fun! ๐ŸŒŠโ˜€๏ธ But all that water, sand and moisture can sometimes lead to painful ear problems in our furry friends.
Keep an eye out for these signs:
โ€ข Scratching or pawing at the ears
โ€ข Frequent head shaking
โ€ข Red or swollen ears
โ€ข Bad smell coming from the ears
โ€ข Brown, yellow or excessive ear discharge
โ€ข Whining or showing pain when the ears are touched
โ€ข Holding the head to one side
โ€ข Rubbing their ears on furniture or the ground
โ€ข Excessive licking or irritation around the ears
Why can summer and beach trips cause problems?
Water trapped inside the ear canal can create a warm, moist environment where yeast and bacteria can multiply, increasing the risk of an ear infection. Sand, salt water and other irritants can also cause inflammation.
๐Ÿพ Beach ear-care tips:
โœ”๏ธ Gently dry your dog's ears after swimming
โœ”๏ธ Keep ears clean and check them regularly
โœ”๏ธ Avoid putting cotton buds deep into the ear canal
โœ”๏ธ Don't use human ear drops unless advised by your veterinarian
โœ”๏ธ If your dog develops symptoms, have their ears checked early
โš ๏ธ Ear infections can be painful and may become more difficult to treat if left untreated.
If your dog is shaking their head, scratching their ears or showing any signs of discomfort this summer, book an appointment with our veterinary team at Edgewater Veterinary Hospital. ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ–ค
Enjoy summer adventures โ€” and keep those ears happy!

This week is Veterinary Nurse & Technologist Awareness Week, and weโ€™re celebrating the fantastic nursing team here at Edgewater Vet Hospital.

A big shout-out to Jo, our Practice Manager, and our Registered Veterinary Nurses Lauren and Sunnie for the skill, care and compassion they bring to our patients, clients and team every day.

Veterinary nurses are involved in so many important parts of patient care, from monitoring anaesthetics and assisting with procedures, to caring for hospital patients, comforting nervous pets, supporting clients and helping keep the clinic running smoothly behind the scenes.

So much of what they do can go unseen, but the difference they make is enormous.

Rosie popped into Edgewater Veterinary Hospital for her annual vaccination and she came dressed to impress!

With recent cases of canine parvovirus reported in the area, keeping your dogโ€™s vaccinations current is more important than ever.

Why is parvovirus a concern?
Canine parvovirus is a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening disease. It can cause severe vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration and, in serious cases, death. The virus can also persist in the environment for long periods and can be spread indirectly on shoes, clothing and other contaminated surfaces.
๐Ÿ’‰ The benefits of vaccination
โœ”๏ธ Helps protect your dog against serious infectious diseases
โœ”๏ธ Reduces the risk of severe illness from parvovirus
โœ”๏ธ Helps reduce the spread of disease within the wider dog population
โœ”๏ธ Gives you peace of mind when your pet is out and about
โœ”๏ธ Annual health checks allow us to pick up other health concerns early

The Australian Veterinary Association recommends core vaccination for dogs against serious diseases including canine parvovirus, canine distemper and canine adenovirus, with vaccination schedules tailored to each individual pet and their level of risk.

Donโ€™t wait until your pet is exposed โ€” prevention is always better than treatment.
If your dogโ€™s vaccination is due, contact Edgewater Veterinary Hospital to book their health check and vaccination.

Spring is here, and while weโ€™re freshening up our homes and gardens, itโ€™s also a great time to check in on your pet.

Have you noticed your pet:

โ€ข Licking or chewing their paws
โ€ข Sneezing more than usual
โ€ข Developing a red or irritated belly
โ€ข Scratching, rubbing or seeming uncomfortable?

These signs can be linked to ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ด๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜€, but fleas, mites and other parasites can also cause irritation and inflammation.

The tricky part is that ongoing scratching and licking can quickly lead to broken skin, secondary infections and a much more uncomfortable pet.

If your pet is showing any of these signs, book a check-up with our team so we can work out whatโ€™s causing it and help get them comfortable again.

And while youโ€™re giving their health routine a spring clean, itโ€™s worth checking their parasite protection too. ๐—ก๐—ผ๐˜ ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ฑ๐˜‚๐—ฐ๐˜๐˜€ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐—ฝ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐—ถ๐˜๐—ฒ, ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฐ๐—น๐˜‚๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—บ, and the right protection can vary depending on your pet and lifestyle.

๐Ÿฐ Lolaโ€™s Desexing Day
with Dr Jacqui & Nurse Lauren
Lola came in to Edgewater Vet recently for her desexing procedure and is recovering well.
Desexing female rabbits provides several important health and welfare benefits, including:
โ€ข Significantly reducing the risk of uterine cancer, which is unfortunately very common in un-desexed female rabbits as they age.
โ€ข Preventing uterine and ovarian diseases, including potentially serious reproductive conditions.
โ€ข Preventing unwanted pregnancies and helping with responsible rabbit population management.
โ€ข Reducing reproductive behaviours, such as mounting, nesting and hormone-related aggression, which can make bonding with other rabbits easier.
โ€ข Supporting long-term health and wellbeing by removing the risks associated with reproductive disease.
Lola was also microchipped, providing permanent identification should she ever become lost or separated from her family. Unlike collars or tags, a microchip cannot easily be lost and can be scanned by veterinary clinics and shelters to help reunite pets with their owners.
Weโ€™re pleased to see Lola doing so well following her procedure and wish her a smooth recovery! ๐Ÿ’—
