Coxswain Grade 1: Your Sea Time Can Work Smarter β
π€ Already getting experience on commercial vessels? That sea time could be taking you toward Coxswain Grade 1.
One detail many people donβt realise is that completing an AMSA task book can significantly reduce the sea service requirement.
For Coxswain Grade 1, AMSA currently requires:
β 30 days sea service on commercial vessels at least 5 metres long when completing an AMSA task book
β 150 days on commercial or recreational vessels at least 5 metres long without the task book
The qualification pathway also includes a Certificate II in Maritime Operations, an AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment, first aid and an appropriate marine radio certificate.
With QMTS, you can work through your training flexibly while continuing to build experience on the water.

MED 3 to MED 2: Build the Engineering Pathway βοΈ
π§ Marine engineering qualifications arenβt just about engines β theyβre about understanding the systems that keep a vessel operating safely.
For MED 3, AMSA requires experience on commercial vessels with at least 75 kW propulsion power. With an AMSA task book, the sea service requirement can be 20 days, compared with 60 days without one. At least half of that sea time must be on vessels with inboard diesel engines.
Moving to MED 2 means greater engineering responsibility. MED 2 can cover chief engineer duties on vessels with inboard propulsion under 750 kW, second engineer duties under 1500 kW, and engine-room duties under 3000 kW.
With QMTS Training, you can work through the technical theory at your own pace with experienced trainer support when you need it.

MED 3 to MED 2: What Actually Changes? βοΈ
π§ Thinking about progressing your engineering qualifications? Hereβs where MED 2 steps things up.
With MED 3, the certificate can cover chief engineer duties on vessels with inboard propulsion under 500 kW, second engineer duties under 750 kW, and engine-room duties on vessels under 3000 kW.
With MED 2, the chief engineer limit increases to 750 kW, while second engineer duties extend to vessels under 1500 kW. Engine-room duties can still extend to vessels under 3000 kW.
That progression means deeper knowledge of propulsion, machinery, engineering systems and safe engine-room operations.
βοΈ Understand the machinery.
π© Understand the systems.
π οΈ Understand what to do when something isnβt right.

Coxswain Grade 1: More Than Driving the Boat β
π€ Coxswain Grade 1 is where vessel handling meets real responsibility.
An AMSA Coxswain Grade 1 certificate can allow you to command and operate the engines of commercial vessels under 12 metres, with inboard propulsion under 500 kW or outboard propulsion of any power, within the permitted operating areas. It can also allow you to work as chief mate or deck watchkeeper on vessels under 24 metres in inshore waters.
And thereβs more to getting qualified than knowing how to steer. The pathway includes sea service, Certificate II training, an AMSA Mandated Practical Assessment, first aid and an appropriate marine radio certificate.
With QMTS, you can work through the theory by flexible distance learning while having experienced trainers there when you need help.
