I have been trying to figure out why apps don’t seem to work in the auditory processing and auditory training space like we hoped they would.

It’s a question I’ve been asking myself for more than a decade. I created my first direct-to-patient therapy program in 2017, actually before I started teaching my online courses.

Given how widespread auditory processing issues are and how many people want affordable care, I was really surprised by how few people chose apps or actually completed them.

Then, a thought hit me as soon as I woke up recently: Apps are lonely.

The reason apps don’t work for auditory training is that people need connection and more support.

When I first created APDsupport, my goal was to offer a therapy where patients didn’t need anyone to support them. But I’ve come to realize that independence was a flaw, not a benefit. Doing this work entirely on your own is just too hard.

For that reason, I’m considering a new way of delivering auditory training. The pilot pairs parents who might be dealing with perimenopause/menopause, long-COVID brain fog, hearing loss, neurodivergence, or lifelong APD with their children with APD (ages 6–12) for an online-dual therapy benefit program.

For members of the Auditory Processing Institute:

If you’ve paid for my courses, I have a whole other layer of awesome coming your way, including a white-labeled option to use with your patients. (The white-label option will only be available inside API, as it requires a deeper understanding of these techniques to use them at their full potential.)

The best way to get therapy is always directly from a licensed audiologist or speech-language pathologist trained to do this work at a high level. But for people who can’t afford that, this pilot could be an option worth trying.

Future versions will cater to adult patients with and without hearing loss.

If you’re interested in getting more details when we announce our launch date, put your thoughts in the comments below.

The potential for this has me genuinely excited about the future for APD clinicians and their clients.

You don’t have to feel lonely. ❤️

What if reading teachers and tutors didn't have to "Go Back" because more children had better auditory skills as a foundation for learning to listen, read, write, and spell?

Heather Davis, Au.D., once shared the image on the left with me from . I love how it explains that auditory skills/phonemic awareness provide a foundation for comprehending what a person reads.

(Now, before all of you hate me for how I made the second image, I also tried to remake it manually, and my graphic designer did too, but it was too confusing.)

The second image is how I re-imagined this process with AI. (I promise to stay dehydrated the rest of the day to make up for the water loss.)

If kids have a stronger foundation in speech sounds, we don't have to go back.

Imagine how much better their self-concept would be if we stopped acting as the ambulance at the bottom of the hill and started building their safety railing at the top?

With kindness and hope,

👋 Hi there. Dr. Angela here.

A man reached out to me to see if I would review his children’s book about APD before it went to press.

That communication ended up being the beginning of a really cool friendship where I got to learn more about him, his journey, and he let me play around with some of the wording in his manuscript.

I know how much time, effort, and money Cliff Edwards invested in his book, Tuning In To Alex, to become another helpful resource as part of the APD process for children.

A few weeks ago, I received this beautiful message from Amanda Ball Levy, Au.D. :

“I put 'Tuning In To Alex' on my waiting room coffee table. Yesterday, when I finished therapy with a teen, her mom was reading it with tears in her eyes and said how much she wished she’d had the book when her daughter was younger. It’s really so great!”

😭

Cliff surprised me by featuring me on the front cover alongside his own. While I don’t deserve that credit, I feel so honored that he included me in his project.

Thank you, Cliff! Good luck with your book sales. ❤️
