NSW RFS Junior Membership - The Future of Firefighting NSW RFS Junior Membership – The Future of Firefighting 🚒Ever wond...

The Blue Mountains has 11 new firefighters!

Today Hazelbrook RFS hosted members from Linden Rural Fire Brigade, Woodford Rural Fire Brigade, Blue Mountains NSW, Wentworth Falls Rural Fire Brigade, NSW RFS - Katoomba/Leura Brigade and RFS - Blue Mountains Group Support Brigade for their FF1/2 assessment.

We're delighted to share that they all passed, including our own newest Hazo firefighters, Gemma and Darcey!

Well done everyone!

CONGRATULATIONS GREG FRULLANI, AFSM

Our brigade is proud to share the announcement that in today’s Australia Day Honours, one of our members has been awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) for distinguished service.

With the awarding of this honour, Greg is recognised for his significant, lasting impact on the NSW RFS and the community.

Over the past 47 years Greg has demonstrated unwavering leadership, dedication and commitment in operational and frontline roles, including fireground command during all major bush fires in the Blue Mountains District over the past two decades. He has been instrumental in the development of operational and training programs, and is renowned for his tireless efforts to improve the way the NSW RFS communicates with the community during bush fire emergencies.

Congratulations Greg. Your knowledge, experience, and dedication to making each of us better firefighters is inspiring – it epitomises the spirit of volunteering. We are privileged to have you as a member of the Hazelbrook Rural Fire Brigade, and proud to call you our friend.

The full Citation for Greg’s AFSM award is as follows:

Firefighter Greg Frullani, Hazelbrook Brigade (Blue Mountains District)

Firefighter Gregory Frullani joined the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) in 1978 and quickly learned that dry firefighting skills, strong leadership and being engaged with your community are of vital importance during bushfires in the Blue Mountains. These have become the traits that Greg is widely renowned for across the RFS.

Greg's commitment, high energy and athleticism led him to be a founding member of the Blue Mountains Remote Area Firefighting Team (RAFT) in the early 1980s. Greg is always enthusiastic to use his experience, skills and training qualifications to develop members’ skills. His expertise was also utilised in developing the state training program for RAFT.

Greg promotes the RFS through community engagement and fundraising, which has led him to be the RFS liaison for over 20 years, collaborating with various external organisations to raise funds for those organisations and the RFS.

Greg’s leadership skills have been recognised as an elected captain and deputy group captain over 36 years of his service. He is well respected as a mentor for new and experienced senior field officers. As a highly valued member of Hazelbrook Rural Fire Brigade, he continues to inspire the team’s camaraderie and achievements.

Heads up, Hazelbrook. We want to take a moment to talk to you about the heatwave conditions we are expecting over the next couple of days, and what they mean for our bush fire risk. You will have seen a range of articles in the media containing warnings about the coming days, and we want to give you the facts so that you can make the best possible decisions and preparations.

While the Fire Danger Rating is currently at High, it looks likely that Saturday will reach a rating of Extreme. Under those conditions, fires will spread quickly and be extremely dangerous.

As always, we will have crews ready to respond to any fires that start. But here's what we need you to be doing:

1️⃣ Review your Bush Fire Survival Plan Now:
Make sure you know when you will leave, where you will go and what you will take if a bush fire starts near you. If you don't have an up to date Bush Fire Survival Plan and need some guidance, please send us a private message and we'll be in touch as quickly as possible.

2️⃣ Tidy up around your home:
Take some time in the coolest part of these very hot days to clear your gutters, and rake or sweep the areas surrounding your house. Move any flammable items that are close to your house, and lay out and connect your garden hoses. Even taking just one of these steps helps to increase your home's bush fire protection.

3️⃣ Stay up to date:
Make sure you have the Hazards Near Me app on your phone and know where to find up to date information on the RFS website. While we're always happy to help, we may not always be able to respond to individual enquiries during times of bush fire activity.

4️⃣ Check on each other:
Take a moment to check in with loved ones and neighbours, particularly those who are elderly or vulnerable. Share this information with them so they can be prepared as well.

If you have any questions, please let us know.

Well Hazelbrook, it has been a blast! Thank you to each and every one of you for making our Santa Run one of the best times of the year, and for all the love and support you continue to bless us with. It is a privilege to be a part of such a special community.

May your Christmas be one which is filled with love, laughter and just a little bit of magic.
