Katy Woodroffe's truly mesmerising artist journals were a foundational point of reference in the preparation for her current exhibition 'Looking Both Ways'.
Detailed, intricate, contemplative, captivating; her journals are truly stunning as are the works that have emerged from them, and from her travels.

Katy Woodroffe —
Looking Both Ways | 80th Birthday Celebration
Tomorrow evening we celebrate the opening of a very special exhibition at Handmark Gallery, 'Looking Both Ways', marking Katy Woodroffe’s 80th birthday and her extraordinary devotion to art, teaching, travel and making.
Drawing on Katy’s experiences around the world, including artist residencies and travels through Paris, India and Spain, the exhibition is grounded in the journals she has kept throughout a lifetime of looking, learning and creating. These records of place, experience and observation have provided a foundation for a body of work that reflects the richness of Katy's immeasurable artistry.
But this exhibition celebrates more than Katy’s remarkable achievements as an artist. For 40 years, Katy was an art teacher, inspiring, influencing and guiding multiple generations of Tasmanian artists, both emerging and established. Her generosity, encouragement and belief in the creative potential of others have made her a beacon of artistic support for so many.
It is a privilege to celebrate Katy, her extraordinary contribution to Tasmania’s art community, and the enduring vitality of her practice.

Congratulations to Handmark's brilliant Janine Combes on receiving a PhD Research Training Scheme Scholarship through the University of Tasmania and the Australian Government.
Janine’s research project, 'Creative Pathways to Climate Citizenship in Marginalised Communities', is a truly transdisciplinary undertaking, based in geography, planning and spatial services with perspectives and guidance from and through art and education.
A wonderful achievement and an exciting next chapter in Janine’s creative and research practice.
Congratulations, Janine. 🥂

“Wonderplay” is the meeting place of wonder and play; a way of painting guided by curiosity, intuition and freedom.
A sense of wonder and curiosity sits at the heart of my practice. It creates a space for me to trust my intuition, let go of certainty and remain open to discovery. Nothing is planned - a plan means you already know the answer to what needs to happen. Staying curious allows for an interaction between myself and the painting - a conversation, a response to what is right there in front of me. — Mel Aliendi
