Today's Topic: Snake Bites π
As the weather warms up, snakes become more active, particularly during the months of October to February, in and around areas of long grass, bushland, waterways and backyards βπ³πΏ
Snake bites are not always obvious, so it's important to know the symptoms of one. This can include pain in the affected area, bleeding or bruising, redness, swelling, headache, dizziness, nausea or even breathing difficulties.
If a snake bite is suspected, treat it as a medical emergency by calling 000 π If safe to do so, move the person away from the snake and then keep them calm and still so as to slow the circulation of venom. Apply a firm pressure bandage (and ideally a splint) and immobilise the affected area.
π¨If the person is unconscious and not breathing, commence CPR immediatelyπ¨
β In terms of what NOT to do: Do not wash, cut or suck the wound, elevate the limb or try to catch or kill the snake.
To help prevent a bite, always wear enclosed, full coverage shoes and clothes when outside, use a torch at night, watch where you step and give snakes plenty of space.
Our mates at First Aid Gear Australia have everything you need to be ready this snake season. To find out more or stock up on immobilisation bandages or first aid kits and supplies head to their website or stop by our Chirnside Park Training Centre π

Today's Topic: Fractures π¦΄
With the AFL Grand Final just one more sleep away, footy fever is well and truly here - but with big tackles, big marks and plenty of action, injuries can happen too! π
A partial or complete crack or break in a bone, a fracture generally occurs as a result of a sudden force or injury, such as a fall, collision or sporting injury, but can also result from repeated stress or weakened bones overtime.
Although they can be hard to identify depending on the type of fracture involved, common signs may include pain, swelling, bruising, tenderness, deformity or difficulty moving the affected area.
If you suspect a fracture, keep the person still, support and immobilise the injured area, avoid straightening or pushing the bone back into place and seek medical assistance. For more serious injuries, call for emergency medical help (000) π
To help minimise the risk of suffering a fracture, be sure to remove all trip hazards around the home and workplace, always hold the handrail when using stairs, minimise risky behaviours and leave the contact sports (such as AFL!) to the professionals - or be sure to undertake proper warm ups and wear the correct protective gear if you do play ππ
Good luck to our two teams competing for the Cup tomorrow - and let's hope we can keep those injuries to a minimum! π
Have a university or high school student in the house? ππ«
Make the most of the holidays by encouraging them to learn a skill that could one day save a life! π
Our Nationally Recognised first aid courses are a great way to build practical and valuable life skills and confidence, giving YOU peace of mind as they start becoming more independent - be it out and about socialising, travelling, working or simply spending more time out in the world on their own πβπΊ
Itβs also a great addition to their resume, with first aid accreditation highly valued (or even a requirement) across many industries and workplaces ββ
Even better? Come along yourself or have them invite a friend to turn this holiday activity into a truly memorable occasion, for more reasons than one.
To find out about our extensive range of courses and training times on offer head to π»www.revive2survive.com.au
After all, just because it's the holidays, it doesn't mean you can't teach them one of the most important life lessons they may ever learn π₯°

ββItβs First Aid Friday! β
Today's Topic: Bee Stings π
With spring in the air, bee stings are common. But knowing the difference between a local reaction and a serious allergic reaction could save a life.
Common signs and symptoms for local reactions include sharp pain at the site, redness, swelling or itching and skin discolouration around the site.
In this instance, the sting can be treated with some basic first aid at home by removing the stinger quickly with your fingernail or a credit card, washing the area with a gentle soap and water and applying a cool compress to help reduce pain and swelling.
The signs of an anaphylactic reaction are much more severe and include trouble breathing or swallowing, swelling of the tongue or throat and tightness in the chest.
Should these symptoms be sighted or suspected, it's imperative to act quickly π¨ Remove the stinger, lay the person flat in a safe space (ideally inside away from the risk of further bees in the area), administer an adrenaline device immediately and seek further medical help (call 000 π). Stay with the person and be prepared to administer a second adrenaline device should there be no response within 5 minutes. If they become unconscious and are not breathing, commence CPR immediately β
Remember - when it comes to anaphylaxis - regardless of the trigger - do not 'wait and see'. Act quicklyβΌοΈ
..And the best thing to do when out and about in the spring sunshine? Try to keep away from those busy bees doing their jobs and dress appropriately in long, loose layers to help prevent the risk of getting stung at all! πππ
