Your meal is about to cost much more 28/11/2021

As the economy reopens, our friends in Hospitality sector are left with a huge struggle, following an already difficult two years! Industry experts have warned that the struggle to retain workers amid interstate and international border closures has led to higher wages for restaurant and cafe staff – which in turn means restaurateurs are making less profit.

As a result, many will have to resort to hiking up prices. The cost of a meal at a restaurant is set to rise by as much as a fifth of its original price with a labour shortage continuing to decimate Australia’s hospitality sector. Restaurant and Catering Industry Association chief executive Wes Lambert says “We expect menu prices will go up between 10 to 20 per cent as we enter 2022.”

Exciting news from the retail industry, with the co-head of family-owned grocer Harris Farm, Tristan Harris, saying he is looking forward to the day when customers can shop for a chocolate bar and get a carbon credit in return for their purchase.

Mr Harris said offsetting or avoiding carbon pollution in the production of food was the best way forward, but the retailer was working hard in every part of the business across its 10,000 products and thousands of suppliers to create a more ecological supply chain.

We are very interested in the concept of a hybrid food hall and dark kitchen, due to launch in early 2022 in Melbourne CBD. Ezistreat aims to revolutionise the dining experience with high-tech, minimal-intervention technology and service systems.

“We want Ezistreat to be a platform to provide an incubator of new hospitality concepts in Melbourne,” says Founder Seyun Kim. “We see Ezistreat as being the optimal location for up-and-coming chefs and food entrepreneurs to test and refine their concept or existing brands wanting to diversify their offering, all within a space that harnesses creativity.”

Ezistreat will be home to 15 different dark kitchens with its own drive-through system for delivery drivers.

The food hall will have 11 casual eateries fitted out with a self-service beer, wine and cocktail bar along with a café that will provide breakfast, coffee and lunch. Under supervision, customers will have a prepaid card to purchase and pour beverages themselves.

The return of pour-over coffee - hospitality | Magazine 25/11/2021

Our hometown of Melbourne is well known to be the coffee capital of Australia, with many of our longest standing customers being the stellar coffee shops and cafes sprinkled across our great city.

Pour over is a technique known for its simplicity. It’s one of the earliest coffee-making processes around, but was ultimately overshadowed by the espresso machine. Once lost in a craze of long blacks, lattes and flat whites, pour over is making a return to specialty cafes across Sydney and Melbourne.

Former Australian Brewers Cup participants and specialty coffee retailers Daniel Yee and Devin Loong speak to Hospitality about the world of filter coffee, how to get the best out of pour over and its reemergence in the Australian coffee scene.

A Melbourne Woolies has challenged shoppers with its QR code location 24/11/2021

A Woolworths store has challenged its shoppers by placing its QR check-in code in a particularly awkward location. A customer raised the matter after having difficulty checking into the retailer’s Metro store in Melbourne’s Southern Cross Station on Sunday.

A photo later shared to Twitter showed the check-in code located with several notices attached to the store’s entrance – but that wasn’t the only obstacle shoppers had to contend with. Not only was the check-in code somewhat disguised among the sea of A4 pages, it had been attached to glass doors that open automatically when approached.

We can't help but think that Woolworths could do with a few of our Cleaner Future floor stand hand sanitiser dispensers, which can host custom branding - including a place to affix QR check-in codes!
