The Disability Discrimination Legal Service Inc (DDLS) is a Victorian statewide independent community legal centre that specialises in disability discrimination legal matters and matters concerning sexual harassment and discrimination against women in the workplace. We provide free legal information and advice, as well as assistance with referrals and casework. We aim to eradicate disability discrimination and to facilitate justice for people with disabilities. Our vision is for there to be no barriers to full inclusion of people with disabilities. The organisation is involved in policy and law reform for the disability sector. The DDLS also holds community legal education sessions for professional and community groups to raise awareness and provide information on the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth), the Equal Opportunity Act 2010 (Vic) and on sexual harassment towards women in the workplace. DDLS undertake community development research projects to investigate and challenge current social, economic and legislative issues affecting people with disabilities in the community. When a bushfire threatened her neighbourhood, Katrina used her smart glasses to identify what she needed to pack, stay connected to neighbours and capture changing conditions around her.

And it is not just for emergencies. The glasses help her read signs, identify objects, navigate unfamiliar places and move through the world with greater confidence and independence.

For some people, smart glasses are not about capturing what is around them. They are about understanding what is around them.

Katrina’s story shows why people who rely on smart glasses must not be caught up in one-size-fits-all restrictions.
