Our Emergency department at Monash Medical Centre is currently experiencing extreme demand.

Non-life-threatening presentations will likely experience longer wait times as a result.

If you need urgent care, but it's non-life-threatening, please consider:

💻 Video call 24/7 Virtual Emergency Department

📱 Telephone 24/7 Nurse-on-Call on 1300 60 60 24

🏥 An Urgent Care Centre

👩‍⚕️ Local doctor or GP

Please see the link in our comments for all the information you need.

We want you to be seen as quickly as possible, so if you need care but it is not an emergency, please consider these alternative pathways to care.

In a life-threatening medical emergency, please call Triple Zero (000) or attend the emergency department.

Wait times at our emergency departments vary, as patients are seen in order of clinical urgency. The most sick or injured are always cared for first.

When a patient arrives at one of our emergency departments, they are assessed or 'triaged' for urgency and categorised on a scale from 1 to 5. Category 1 patients require immediate life-saving treatment, whereas Category 5 patients need non-urgent care.

A moving milestone at Monash Children’s Hospital 💙

Baby Nyra and her family were farewelled with a joyful guard of honour as they headed home for the first time👶

For our teams, moments like this are what they work towards.

After she was born extremely prematurely at 22 weeks and 6 days, Nyra spent almost 10 months in hospital.

Her care involved teams from across Monash Children’s Hospital, including doctors, nurses, allied health, respiratory, complex care and support workers, as well as cleaners, ward clerks, administrators, biomedical engineers, and more.

Nyra’s moving farewell is a powerful reminder that outstanding care is delivered by many hands and that teamwork truly makes the dream work ✨

Thinking about using peptides purchased online? 💉🧪

Monash Health Endocrinologist Professor Peter Fuller AM, who is also a physician-scientist at the Hudson Institute of Medical Research, explains the risks and recommends where to get safe health advice.📝

Victorian hospitals have seen several cases of acute liver injury after people injected unapproved, unregulated peptides labelled as Retatrutide.

The products were purchased online, through friends, and through social media accounts.

Retatrutide is an experimental drug that is not approved for sale as a safe medical product in Australia.🚫

The cases have prompted warnings from the Therapeutic Goods Administration - TGA and the Victorian Department of Health not to use unapproved peptide products that have not been prescribed by a medical practitioner. 👩‍⚕️💉

🏠 SECU team creates safe and sustainable pathways home 🏠

Congratulations to the Secure Extended Care Unit (SECU) Occupational Therapy team, our latest STAR Award winners for exceptional teamwork! 🏅

Through careful planning, strong advocacy and specialised NDIS expertise, the team is helping consumers leave hospital when they are ready and transition safely into the community. In 2025, they secured more than $8.17 million in additional funding and helped reduce the average length of stay from 8 years to 1.3 years.🏥

‘Our ability to remain flexible, learn from each other and adapt our practice as a team has been key to responding to the changing NDIS environment and supporting more sustainable transitions for consumers,’ Mary Sherlock, Senior Occupational Therapist said.

This award demonstrates what is possible when clinical expertise, persistence and compassionate care come together.💙

Cannabis oil changing the game for kids with Autism | A Current Affair 16/09/2026

📺 A Current Affair has highlighted promising work underway at Monash Children’s Hospital, where a medicinal cannabis trial is exploring potential support for children and young people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Led by Dr Michael Fahey, a neurologist at Monash Children’s Hospital and Professor in the Department of Paediatrics at Monash University, the research so far shows the medicinal cannabis derived biopharmaceutical NTI164 is associated with statistically significant and clinically meaningful symptom improvement relating to severity of illness, social behaviour, and communication.

The next step is a larger Phase III trial (HarmonyPlus). It will get underway at Monash Children's Hospital this year and further investigate the treatment’s safety and effectiveness. It will recruit 200 participants aged from 6 years to 25 years inclusive.

This work reflects Monash Health’s commitment to advancing research that may help improve care and outcomes for children and families 🧠🔬
