A diagnosis doesn't define a person đź’™

For Alice and her mum, Sarah, Bipolar Type 1 has been just one part of their family's story. Together, they've faced stigma, challenged assumptions and continue to speak up so others don't have to face silence or judgement alone.

Their story is featured as part of the National Stigma and Discrimination Reduction Report Card, an initiative led by the National Mental Health Commission that brings together lived experience stories and evidence to track stigma in Australia and inspire meaningful change.

Steve’s story is a reminder that living with schizophrenia can look like more than just getting by 🌿

For Steve, supportive relationships, understanding at work and learning more about his own mental health have all played a part in helping him manage his diagnosis.

More than half of the people in Australia who took part in our study reported a lack of understanding from family partners and their mates đź‘€

Sometimes stigma shows up in the closest relationships, in how experiences are questioned, dismissed, or misunderstood.

This is one of many lived experiences captured in the 2026 National Stigma and Discrimination Report Card.

We can have a pretty fixed idea of what mental illness looks like, and who it can happen to. But the reality is much more complicated.

In a recent Times story, journalist, Sarah Berry explores some of the stereotypes and assumptions around mental illness, sharing the lived experience of SANE Peer Ambassador Anita Link, who has experienced postpartum psychosis herself, alongside insights from our CEO Rachel Green.

Anita has also shared her own perspective and experience in a blog, which you can read here https://anitalinkthoughtfood.com/2026/08/19/the-postpartum-psychosis-circus-is-in-town/

Her story is a reminder that there’s no one “type” of person who can experience complex mental health issues. Challenging these assumptions can help create more understanding and make it easier for people to reach out for support.

Some of the news going around now may be distressing. If you or someone you know is struggling with complex mental health, we’re here for you:

Sometimes, getting through the day can come down to the smallest things.

A person you love. A birthday you promised you’d show up for. Your plants. A dog you saw on your walk. The sun coming out. Chocolate.

When things feel really hard, those little things can matter more than we realise đź’›

This R U OK? Day and World Su***de Prevention Day, let’s change the narrative around su***de. For some people, suicidal thoughts aren’t a short-term crisis. They can be an ongoing part of life, and one conversation may be just the beginning.

Support can look like trusted friends who check in, peer workers who get it, therapy, community, chosen family, routines and the small moments of joy that help someone get through another day.

Read Meg Collisson’s story about living with persistent suicidal thoughts, and the people and things that have helped them keep going. Read it here https://www.sane.org/information-and-resources/the-sane-blog/wellbeing/persistent-suicidality

Because su***de prevention is about more than one conversation. It’s about creating space for ongoing support, connection and understanding, without judgement or stigma.

Sometimes stigma shows up in places you’d never expect.

Not in headlines or big moments, but in everyday experiences that quietly tell people they don’t belong.

Sandy’s story is one of many shared in the 2026 National Stigma and Discrimination Report Card by the Mental Health Commission and SANE Australia, highlighting the real impact stigma can have on people living with complex mental health issues.
