📼 FIGHTREWIND CLASSIC — K-1 MAX OCEANIA ERA
Here’s another piece of Australian kickboxing history from the early 2000s! 🔥
Joshua Lam stepped into the ring against Papua New Guinea’s legendary Stanley “The Headhunter” Nandex in a matchup between two fighters from Oceania's hard-hitting kickboxing scene.
Nandex was one of PNG’s most decorated combat sports athletes.🥊
He began his martial arts journey in the late 1980s and eventually competed in taekwondo, karate, kung fu, and kickboxing. He represented PNG internationally and finished 5th at the 1997 World Kickboxing Championships in Dublin.
His career went on to include seven amateur world titles and five professional world titles, making him one of the most successful fighters PNG has produced.
And if you've been following FightRewind, you'll know we've already featured some of the names connected to this era. 👊
The 2002 K-1 MAX Oceania tournament in Melbourne featured fighters including John Wayne Parr, Mike Zambidis, Jenk Behic, Shane Chapman, Billy Kian Mamu and Joshua Lam. Lam had faced Jenk Behic earlier in the tournament before meeting Nandex.
Nandex would later share the ring with some of the biggest names in the Australian and international kickboxing scene, including Mike Zambidis.

🏆 Australian Title — Kickboxing
⏱️ 5-Round War
📅 1995
Some fights become part of Australian fight folklore — and this is one of them! 💥
A young Sam “King” Soliman stepped into the ring against Jarrod Curtis in this Australian title showdown promoted through International Kickboxer Magazine.
Soliman was only around 21 years old at the time, but he was already building the combat-sports career that would eventually take him around the world. He would go on to become an ISKA & WKA kickboxing champion before moving into professional boxing. 🥊
But on this night in 1995, Jarrod Curtis produced the upset and walked away with the Australian title.
🔥 One of the great “what if?” stories of Australian kickboxing.
According to the history surrounding the fight, Soliman wanted another opportunity against Curtis for years, but the rematch never materialised.
And while Curtis' career may not have reached the international heights that Soliman's eventually did, this fight remains a fascinating chapter in his story and a reminder of just how unpredictable fight sports can be.
What makes it even more interesting?
That young fighter Soliman would eventually reinvent himself as a professional boxer and, almost two decades later, shock the boxing world by defeating Felix Sturm in Germany in 2014 to become IBF World Middleweight Champion at age 40. 🏆🌏
From an Australian kickboxing title fight in 1995 to a world boxing championship in 2014 — what a career!

🥊 Melbourne Fight Night 1994 — STRICTLY BUSINESS
In the 1990s, Australian fight fans were treated to some incredible international matchups — and this was one of them! 🔥
RAMON “THE DIAMOND” DEKKER
By 1994, Dekker was already one of the most recognised names in international Muay Thai. The Dutch fighter was travelling the world testing himself against elite opposition, and his 1994 record included battles with names such as Dida Diafat, Gilbert Ballantine, Saimai Chor Suanatant, Superlek Sorn E-Sarn and Coban Lookchaomaesaitong.
JOHN BING
Bing came from Auckland, New Zealand, and stepped into the Melbourne ring to face one of the era's biggest international stars.
Records list the contest as a professional Muay Thai bout at around 143 lbs / 65 kg.
🔥 THE FIGHT
The two went toe-to-toe in Melbourne before the contest was stopped at 2:58 of Round 4, with Dekker awarded the TKO victory.
For Australian fans, this was more than another fight night. It was a chance to see an international Muay Thai superstar compete LIVE on Australian soil right inside the legendary Melbourne fight scene of the 1990s. 🇦🇺🥊

🏆 Test of Courage – Tarik Solak Promotion
The 1990s were a golden era for Australian kickboxing, and this was one of those nights that fight fans who were there will never forget! 🔥
Gurkan Ozkan stepped into the ring against Changpuek Kiatsongrit, one of Thailand's most respected international Muay Thai fighters.
Changpuek, also known as “The White Elephant”, had built an extraordinary international career, regularly taking on bigger opponents and competing across Muay Thai, kickboxing and K-1. He was a multiple-time world champion and recorded major victories over fighters including Rob Kaman, Rick Roufus, Peter Smit and Tosca Petridis.
And his résumé was seriously impressive. In the 1993 K-2 Grand Prix, Changpuek defeated Rob Kaman and Tosca Petridis before meeting Ernesto Hoost in the final. He had also shared the ring with legendary names such as Andy Hug, Branko Cikatić, Taiei Kin and Rick Roufus.
Changpuek's own recollections show just how international his career had become. He estimated around 500 professional fights, including dozens in Japan, and described fighting much larger opponents on the K-1 circuit.
So when he arrived in Melbourne for Test of Courage, he wasn't just another opponent.
💥 Gurkan Ozkan stopped Changpuek in the FIRST ROUND by KO at 1:58.
A stunning moment in Australian fight history and a reminder of how unpredictable the old-school fight game can be! 👊🔥
Gurkan Ozkan would go on to become a recognised name in the Australian kickboxing scene, later sharing the ring with fighters including Stan “The Man” Longinidis and Mike “Iron” Zambidis. Ozkan and Zambidis would even meet in later years in Australia.

⚡ A CLASSIC FROM THE GOLDEN ERA OF KICKBOXING! ⚡
Melbourne Town Hall. Tarik Solak promotion. Two tough international fighters meeting under the bright lights. 🇦🇺🇬🇷
Jenk Behic was a Melbourne-based fighter who earned a reputation for taking on serious competition, and in the K-1 MAX Oceania 2002 tournament he stopped Joshua Lam in the quarter-final before meeting Zambidis in the semi-final.
Opposite him stood Mike “Iron” Zambidis, the explosive Greek powerhouse who would become one of the best-known names of the K-1 MAX era. His career included the 2002 K-1 World MAX Oceania title, multiple world championships, and an official career record of 158 wins from 180 fights, including 87 knockouts.
🔥 And here's the incredible part…
Behic and Zambidis met twice in 2002. They first met at It’s Finally On at Melbourne Town Hall, then crossed paths again in the K-1 MAX Oceania tournament later that year.
That second event featured some serious Australian talent too, including John Wayne Parr, Shane “Choppa” Chapman and Alex Tui — a snapshot of just how strong the Australian kickboxing scene was at the time. 🇦🇺🔥

Back in May 1995, the Australian kickboxing scene was producing some seriously tough fighters and “Diamond” Dale Westerman was right in the middle of it.

📅 May 1995
🥊 Kickboxing
This was old-school Australian kickboxing: hard rounds, big challenges and fighters willing to put everything on the line. 💥
Westerman was part of the Melbourne fight scene and trained under respected martial artist and coach Bryce Birtwistle. Birtwistle's documented list of fighters includes Westerman alongside several other well-known Australian combat sports names.
And 1995 would become a huge year in Westerman's career.
Just months after this bout, “Diamond” Dale Westerman stepped onto the international K-1 stage in Japan, facing Japan's Taiei Kin at K-1 Revenge II in Yokohama on September 3, 1995. The fight went the full five rounds, and Kin won by unanimous decision.
That makes this footage even more interesting; we're looking back at Westerman during the same year he would go on to compete on one of the biggest kickboxing stages in the world. 🌏🔥

Rewind to a time when women’s kickboxing in Australia was still fighting for recognition. In July 1994, two warriors stepped into the famous Festival Hall ring for a battle that forms part of Australia’s early women’s combat-sports history. 👊🔥
SONGUL “DIAMOND” ORUC was a genuine pioneer. Oruc describes herself as Australia’s first female World Kickboxing Champion, and says that during the 1990s women were not permitted to fight in the ring. Through persistence, she helped push for women to be allowed to compete across Australia. Her titles included East Coast, South Pacific, Australian Kickboxing, World Kickboxing and World Thai-boxing championships.
Her career later expanded internationally into professional boxing. Oruc fought in the United States and defeated Jeanne Martinez by TKO in 1998. In 2000, she defeated Alicia Ashley by split decision, and contemporary women's boxing rankings placed Oruc No. 5 in the world at junior lightweight.
But before those international battles came nights like this one…

🔥 FOUR YEARS LATER — THEY MET AGAIN! 🔥
In 1999, Bannan and Shafiypour crossed paths once more at the Magic Millions Showroom in a Muay Thai bout. This time, Scott Bannan got his hand raised, winning by decision. 👊
Scott Bannan went on to become one of Australia's most accomplished fighters. In a later interview, Bannan recalled finishing his career with 67 fights, 60 wins and 12 titles, including three world titles, competing across junior middleweight, middleweight and super middleweight. 🏆
