The MacGyver’s — Day 12 🏆🚗
Car auction and awards
Nice to be in a bed again!
Today we headed to the Darwin Yacht Club for the auction and awards. Four of our team cars went under the hammer, and all four sold for an incredible $2,522, adding even more to the Cancer Council fundraiser. 🙌
We enjoyed a great buffet lunch before the awards, where Scrappy King bought Tumu Pharlap head off their car for charity. What a marvellous effort!
We were absolutely thrilled that our group won the Spirit of the Rally! 🏆 Such a fantastic recognition of the fun, friendship and spirit we’ve shared throughout the journey.
Overall, it’s been an amazing rally filled with incredible memories, plenty of laughs and a wonderful group of people who, without doubt, will be friends for life. ❤️
A huge thank you to everyone who has supported us, donated and helped us raise money for such an amazing cause. Your generosity has meant so much to us.
Until next time…
Always be prepared for adventure! 🧭

The MacGyver’s — Day 11
Timber Creek to Darwin — 609 km 🏁
We woke up this morning not to a rooster, but to bats. Because apparently even the local wildlife wanted to make sure we got absolutely no sleep!
After a questionable night’s rest, the big question was: how the hell was our beautifully blended team of 12 going to make it to Darwin the rally’s cars were dropping like flies?
Timber Creek was a ripper spot — amazing boab trees, crocodiles and enough cane toads to make you wonder if we’d accidentally driven into a cane toad convention.
We hit the road around 9:00am with one simple mission:
Get the bloody cars to Darwin.
That’s it. No heroics. No unnecessary stops. No mechanical dramas.
Well… that lasted about five minutes.
The rally had now reached around 30 dead cars — a Sh*tbox Rally record! At this point, seeing a broken-down car on the side of the road was basically just another landmark.
The temperature was climbing, the roads were long and we were nervously watching the temperature gauges. Then came the first casualty:
Flat battery.
Then Bit Future decided it wanted some attention with a buggered shock, followed by a bludged front tyre.
Stress levels: 📈📈📈
We eventually limped into Katherine, grabbed some fuel and had a quick chat with the cars:
“Listen, we don’t need you to be good. We just need you to survive.”
And somehow, they listened.
We had a great run for another 1½ hours towards Adelaide River. The scenery was beautiful, the temperature was a toasty 37°C, and naturally there was no air conditioning.
Because why would we want comfort at this stage?
We made it another hour out of Adelaide River.
Darwin was so close we could practically smell the finish line.
Then…
ANOTHER BREAKDOWN.
Nobby’s oil pressure was sitting on max , he was telling us “Mate, there’s bugger-all left.”
A quick fix ( rip the wire of the sender), a bit of crossed fingers and we decided the best mechanical strategy was:
Drive slower and hope for the best.
And somehow…
WE MADE IT! 🏁🎉
609 km of heat, bats, cane toads, flat batteries, stuffed shocks, dodgy tyres, disappearing oil and some of the quickest fix a team of bush mechanics could do!
But our blended team of 12 made it to Darwin.
The cars may never be the same again.
Neither will we.
THE MACGYVER’S MADE IT TO THE FINISH LINE! 🍻🚗💨🏆

The MacGyver’s – Day 10
Daly Waters → Timber Creek | 488 km | 70 km sealed
After a great night’s sleep at Daly Waters, we had breakfast and thought we’d be nearly last out.
Wrong. 😂
The rules changed, another buddy group joined us, taking our convoy to 12 vehicles. Because they were also Top 10 fundraisers, we suddenly found ourselves at the front of the pack.
Clearly the organisers had decided we needed to experience the breakdowns first-hand. 🤣
About 30 km in, one of the new team’s cars decided it had had enough of life. Quick fix and we were back on the road.
Then came the bull dust. Bloody everywhere! Visibility was ordinary, breathing was optional and the cars slowly turned the same colour as the track.
We cruised along at a sensible pace until… another breakdown. One of ours this time. Fixed and moving again.
Made it to Top Springs, then tackled the Dashwood River crossing. Another breakdown followed shortly afterwards.
At this stage, we were starting to think the cars were taking turns. 😂
Then the track changed from dusty to “who needs a sump anyway?” Small boulders everywhere, so we slowed right down and picked our way through.
We stopped for a quick dip at Jasper Gorge — a very welcome break from the dust, rocks and mechanical dramas.
Back onto the track and… yep, it got even worse!
Eventually we reached the bitumen. Hallelujah! 🙌
Then another bloody breakdown. 😂
Finally, all fixed and we rolled into Timber Creek, set up camp and started comparing war stories.
Then came the news: two of our teams from last year had both killed their cars, along with another eight or so vehicles.
I’m not sure of the official stats, but I reckon the vehicle graveyard is now somewhere in the 20s! 🪦🚙😂
488 km travelled, 70 km of bitumen, countless breakdowns, enough bull dust to fill a vacuum cleaner and somehow… we made it!
Another bloody great day with a fantastic bunch of people.
The cars might not make it, but the laughs definitely will! 😂🍻🚙
Over 7000kms in 11 days
The MacGyvers have crossed the Dashwood River!
A huge thank you to Work Bench Warehouse for your incredibly generous support and donation! ❤️

The MacGyver’s Day 9 — Alice Springs to Daly Waters 🤠🚗💨
917 km of sealed road.
One sleep-deprived crew and enough snoring to power the whole Northern Territory! 😂 Also Lots of heavy rain! We dragged ourselves out of bed at 5:30am and left Alice Springs at 7:30 am.
15°C, raining and looking miserable — but we cracked on at a respectable 110 km/h.
Stopped at the Devils Marbles for a look, then back on the road. Not long after, one of the team cars decided it was a good time to start cooking itself. 🔥🚗
Fuelled up at Three Ways near Tennant Creek and carried on through some absolutely fantastic country.
Then… yep, you guessed it — another overheating car. At this point we’re starting to think the cars are just trying to recreate the Devils Marbles in engine form. 😂
Nobby’s oil pressure is also doing its usual weird and wonderful dance, keeping us all entertained and slightly nervous.
We managed to overtake a few road trains and even a couple of locals, so clearly we were flying. Or they were going backwards. Either way, we’ll take the win! 🏆
Finally rolled into Daly Waters to a beautiful 34°C and sunshine. Much better!
Fuelled up for tomorrow, headed to the pub, had a feed, talked absolute dribble for a while and then went to bed.
Another brilliant day in the books.
917 km done. Cars still running. Mostly. 😂🍻🇦🇺
