For much of my career as a psychologist, I've been interested in what happens when the work itself becomes a source of harm.

Over the years, I've worked with people experiencing burnout, compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, moral injury, workplace bullying, and psychological injury. Again and again, I've noticed that many of these experiences are explained as individual problems requiring individual solutions.

Yet the reality is often more complex.

Burnout, moral injury, and occupational psychological harm do not occur in a vacuum. Workload, workplace culture, leadership, ethical conflicts, psychosocial hazards, and organisational systems all play a role in shaping our wellbeing at work.

This interest eventually led me to develop **Still Cracked** — a unique 21-hour experiential CPD program for helping professionals.

Still Cracked combines contemporary research, professional reflection, discussion, nervous system regulation, and hands-on clay work to explore the impact that caring professions can have on the people who work within them.

Together we'll explore:
🌿 Burnout, compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, and moral injury
🌿 Occupational psychological harm and psychosocial hazards
🌿 Nervous system regulation and sustainable practice
🌿 Creativity, clay, and embodied reflection
🌿 Building a professional life that doesn't require self-abandonment

No artistic experience is required.

Just a willingness to reflect, create, and have honest conversations about the realities of caring work.

Because sometimes the cracks are not evidence that something is wrong with you.

Sometimes they are evidence of what the work has cost.

One of the hardest parts of helping professions is that much of the workload is invisible.

For psychologists, allied health professionals, support workers, healthcare staff, carers, and educators, burnout is often about far more than being “busy.”

It can come from:
• carrying emotional responsibility all day
• supporting people through distress and trauma
• navigating complex systems
• making difficult ethical decisions
• remaining calm and regulated under pressure
• worrying about mistakes, risk, or complaints
• continuing to function while emotionally exhausted

Many helping professionals become so used to holding everything together that they stop noticing how depleted they are.

The pressure to appear capable, calm, and unaffected can become part of the burden itself.

This is why supervision, reflective spaces, and genuine recovery matter.

Not because professionals are weak or incapable —
but because human nervous systems were never designed for continuous emotional output without restoration.

At BioPsyche, I provide board-approved supervision and support for helping professionals experiencing burnout, compassion fatigue, moral distress, and chronic occupational stress.

You do not have to carry the weight of caring work alone.

When you’re dealing with injury, chronic pain, or a long-term health condition, it can feel like so much is outside your control.

Things like recovery timelines, flare-ups, or decisions made by insurers or workplaces can be uncertain and difficult to influence.

It’s completely understandable that your attention goes there.

But over time, focusing on what we can’t control often increases stress, without actually helping the situation.

A helpful approach is to gently shift your focus toward what *is* within your control.

This might include:
• how you pace your energy
• how you respond to symptoms
• the small steps you take each day
• how you speak to yourself during difficult moments

These may seem like small things, but they are often where meaningful change begins.

The goal isn’t to control everything.

It’s to use your energy in ways that support your wellbeing, especially when your capacity is already limited.

(We’ve included a simple visual below that we often use with clients to help guide this.)

You can be managing at work… and still not be okay.

Not because you’re doing anything wrong —
but because what’s being asked of you, over time, is too much.

Some workplace stress is obvious.
But a lot of it isn’t.

It can look like:
• constant pressure that never really switches off
• unclear expectations or shifting priorities
• low support or limited control
• environments that keep your system on edge

These are known as psychosocial hazards — and they’re now recognised as a workplace health and safety issue in Australia.

Over time, they can impact how you think, feel, and function — often gradually, and often quietly.

We’ve written a new blog to help make sense of this in a clear and grounded way.

Thinking About Therapy?

You don’t need to be in crisis to start therapy.

Feeling stuck, exhausted, or quietly overwhelmed is reason enough.

Therapy That Goes at Your Pace.

Therapy doesn’t have to be intense to be effective.

At BioPsyche, sessions are paced, collaborative, and grounded — because safety comes before insight.

Burnout Isn’t a Personal Failure.
Burnout is not a motivation problem.
It’s a nervous system that’s been under pressure for too long.

If rest doesn’t help anymore, that’s a sign your system needs support — not self-criticism.
