Life in the Bush
https://youtube.com/@LifeintheBush. On a mission to inspire bushland appreciation across Australia. My name is Karen Schmidt.
I love sharing my appreciation for our beautiful Australian bushland. I'm a content creator, bushland regenerator, bushwalking guide and educator.
We ๐ learning from people like Vanda about their native gardens.
We were particularly keen to visit Vandaโs coastal garden as she has lots of native butterflies and caterpillars.
If you want to attract butterflies to your garden you need the nectar rich wildflowers but more importantly you need the specific host plants that their caterpillars eat.
You can find out more about our native butterflies and caterpillars in our Butterfly Fact Sheet. Free to download from our website.
The Carnaby's confirmed my seedling selection. What a gratifying job it is to be planting these for the Carnaby's and to find them hanging out in the exact species when I arrive on site ๐๐ฆ๐ณ

๐ฎ Moments from my next video going live tomorrow on my YouTube cannel. ๐ฆI was so fortunate to witness the release of 30 Black Cockatoos into the wild, following rehabilitation at the Perth Wildlife Hospital. These birds wouldn't have survived if it wasn't for the efforts of the people who brought them into care, the donors and the carers, I have so much respect for the work they do. I hope you enjoy the video ๐ฅฐ
I was so fortunate to attend this release event. Witnessing the birds return to the wild and circle the skies exploring the woodland was exciting and emotional. Meeting the wonderful volunteers who have poured their hearts and souls into rehabilitating these birds was such an honour. One bird had to have staples in her head to save her after being hit by a car and it was incredible that she survived and very emotional for the volunteers to see her set free. YouTube video coming soon ๐คโค๏ธ๐ฆ๐ฆ
Update!
Iโll be sharing a video of this release soon ๐๐ค๐ค๐คโค๏ธ๐ค๐ค๐คโค๏ธ

WASR is still rescuing seabirds.
With the wild weather battering our coastline this weekend, we expect to receive calls about beach-washed pelagic birds. This is a regular occurrence during the winter months in Western Australia and something we anticipate with these big weather systems. With recent pelagic species testing positive for H5N1, WASR has enacted our bird flu procedures for all pelagic species. We are working closely with our state regulators, DBCA and DPIRD as well as the many wonderful wildlife hospitals who treat our native wildlife, to ensure any contact with these species is done in a safe and controlled way.
If you see a sick or injured seabird this weekend, please phone us. Please do not touch the affected bird, and keep children and pets at a distance. If the bird is a pelagic species or is symptomatic, we will don PPE and transport the bird to one of our wonderful wildlife centres where it will be assessed, tested and given care in isolation or quarantine. This afternoon, our Mandurah volunteers caught and transported this Northern Giant Petrel to our friends WA Wildlife.
WASR will not be collecting dead birds. If you see multiple dead birds, please call the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on: 1800675888
