A lot of people want to get into this field as they think it’s wandering about with your dog having a great time.

⏰ Then they have to get up at 3am or train when they are exhausted to meet the needs of the incredible dogs we work with.

Working together doing important things is incredibly rewarding but it’s also tough.

🚙 There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes that isn’t glamorous or fun even before the long drives, 3am starts, walking through the cold and heat, and coming home from a ten hour day to train the dogs that didn’t go out today because your staff called in sick.

🤢 There are vet and physio visits, fitness training, and maintenance training at dawn because it’s 40C before 8am.

😢 There’s leaving your retired dogs to be in the field.

📋 There’s paperwork and ethics permits and data management and quality control and mapping and reporting, and logistics and logistics.

You are an ecologist and outdoorsperson, safety officer, data manager, advocate for your dog and nature.

🗺️ AND you have to do it while you watch nature suffering. While you see the El Niño forecast and go home and cry.

🐾 This job is a privilege and a joy but it most certainly is not for the faint hearted.

Two of our most experienced threatened species detection dogs, Evie and Dallas, are part of the DFG Great Desert Skink Detection program.
