Redoubtable stayer Brickies Dream broke through for his first win in his comeback campaign when he finished powerfully into a strong headwind to win the Northern Suburbs Weekly Past President’s Cup over 2130m at Gloucester Park on Friday night.
It was an impressive performance which left his trainer-reinsman Robbie Williams setting his sights on the $450,000 WA Pacing Cup in December for the New Zealand-bred seven-year-old who has made a complete recovery from a fractured leg which threatened to end his career 11 months ago.
Brickies Dream ran a splendid trial for last season’s WA Pacing Cup when he finished a close fourth behind Minstrel, Never Ending and Mister Smartee in the San Simeon Pace on October 31 last year.
But he suffered a fractured near fore pastern in that event which required surgery when a screw was inserted in his leg. This kept him out of action for seven months, and his form leading into Friday night’s event was most encouraging, with five fourth placings and a neck second to Luvbite in the 3309m Marathon at his six previous starts.
Brickies Dream was a $9.40 chance from the No. 4 barrier, and after the polemarker and $2.75 second fancy Penny Black galloped at the start and the $2.45 favourite Harrison John dashed straight to the front, Williams was more than happy to settle down in fourth position, one-out and one-back.
The final quarters were run in 27.9sec. and 28.3sec. and Harrison John led by almost two lengths on the home turn, with Brickies Dream looming large after being switched three wide with about 375m to travel.
Brickies Dream got to the front in the final few strides and won by a neck from the fast-finishing Sweet Pins ($11), with Harrison John a half-head away in third place.
“Everything worked out well,” explained Williams. “It was so windy and it was a huge advantage to have cover while horses leading or in the breeze were exposed to the strong headwind in the home straight. The breeze was like a brick wall.
“It has taken a while to get Brickies Dream back to his best form, and he is just starting to show the form he was in a year ago when he was up against horses like Minstrel and Magnificent Storm. If he regains that form, he will be a good sniper in the big races.”
Brickies Dream has raced 54 times for 16 wins, 14 placings and $246,654 in prizemoney.
