People living with dementia still have personalities, preferences, relationships, interests and stories to share. Yet stigma and misconceptions can lead to people feeling excluded or overlooked.

💜 Dementia is now Australia’s leading cause of death

New Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows that in 2024, dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, became Australia’s leading cause of death, accounting for more than 17,500 deaths.

Dementia has a significant impact not only on the person living with it, but also on families, carers and communities.

These figures highlight why awareness, understanding, early support and quality care matter.

This Dementia Action Week, let’s continue the conversation and work towards a more dementia-inclusive community. 💜

New Australian dementia survey highlights the need for earlier support 💜

The first national survey of Australians living with dementia and their carers has highlighted some important challenges in the dementia journey.

🔹 Fewer than half of people surveyed received a diagnosis within their first year.
🔹 Around 2 in 5 people waited three years for a diagnosis.
🔹 Around 40% did not receive information about support services after diagnosis.
🔹 Only 16% accessed reablement programs designed to support independence and wellbeing.
🔹 Many carers reported feeling overwhelmed, lonely and unable to make time for their own wellbeing.

A dementia diagnosis can be a life-changing moment, but it should also be the beginning of receiving the right information, support and opportunities to maintain independence.

At Memory Nurture, we believe support should be person-centred and start as early as possible. Understanding the person, their goals and what matters to them can help people living with memory loss and their families navigate the journey with greater confidence.

💜 Early support matters. So does supporting the person and the people who care for them.

This World Alzheimer’s Day, we’re highlighting the importance of early diagnosis.

Recognising the signs of Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia early can help people and their families:

💜 Access the right support and information sooner
💜 Understand what may be causing changes in memory, thinking or behaviour
💜 Plan for the future and make informed decisions
💜 Explore available treatments, services and supports
💜 Maintain independence and quality of life for as long as possible

A diagnosis does not change who a person is. Early support can make a meaningful difference to the journey ahead.

If you or someone you love is experiencing ongoing changes in memory or thinking, speak with your GP or health professional.

Early diagnosis. Early support. More time to plan, connect and live well.

This Dementia Action Week, we’re shining a light on dementia, raising awareness and encouraging greater understanding and support for people living with dementia, their families and carers.

Dementia is more than memory loss. It can affect thinking, communication, behaviour and everyday activities, but with the right support, people living with dementia can continue to live meaningful and connected lives.

At Memory Nurture, we believe in seeing the person, not just the diagnosis. We’re passionate about creating opportunities for connection, purpose, wellbeing and participation.

Throughout Dementia Action Week, we’ll be sharing information, ideas and resources to help build a more dementia-friendly community. 💜

📚 The Human Library Experience 💬

What if, instead of borrowing a book, you could “borrow” a person and hear their story?

The Human Library is an opportunity to connect with people from different backgrounds and experiences through open, respectful conversations. Each person becomes a “human book”, sharing their story and inviting questions in a safe and welcoming environment.

🔎 Research Study: Pain Management & Dementia in Emergency Departments

Edith Cowan University is conducting research exploring how pain is assessed and managed for people living with dementia in Emergency Departments, from the perspective of family carers.

👥 Who can participate?
Family carers who have accompanied a family member living with dementia to a Western Australian Emergency Department within the past 6 months.

Your experience could help researchers better understand the challenges of recognising and managing pain and contribute to improving care for people living with dementia in emergency settings.
