It happens in almost every household with young children: you spend time carefully preparing a fresh, nutrient-dense meal, only to place it in front of your toddler and watch them push it away with dramatic flair. Mealtime meltdowns are a normal, universal stage of early childhood development—yet they remain one of the most frustrating challenges parents face.

Walk into almost any modern playroom or big-box store toy aisle, and you’ll be met with a barrage of flashing lights, synthesised songs, and robotic voices. Electronic, battery-operated toys are designed to grab a child’s attention fast—and they do! But as parents and educators, we have to ask a critical question: Does a toy that does everything actually help our children learn anything?

As a parent, your day is filled with moments of wonder: watching your toddler take their first steps, seeing your preschooler master a balance bike, or listening to stories after a fun day at childcare. But alongside those milestones come the inevitable bumps, scrapes, and sudden fevers.

In a child’s early years, every interaction, story, and classroom activity serves as a foundational building block for how they view the world. As early childhood educators and care providers, we bear a profound responsibility: to build an environment where every child feels seen, valued, and celebrated for precisely who they are.

Every parent wants to raise a child who is confident, resilient, and capable of navigating the world’s ups and downs. We invest in enrichment programmes, encourage academic learning, and structure playdates to ensure our children thrive. But what if one of the most effective tools for building emotional strength and self-assurance doesn’t require a structured activity, an expensive toy, or even your direct involvement?

Every parent knows the feeling: the sudden, explosive onset of a toddler tantrum, a big-kid meltdown, or a tearful emotional overload. In those intense moments—when yelling, crying, or stomping takes over—it is entirely natural for your own stress levels to spike. Your heart races, your jaw tightens, and your instinct might be to match their energy with strict commands or frantic negotiations.

Waking up to see your toddler with swollen, watery, or crusty red eyes can instantly trigger stress for any parent. Conjunctivitis—commonly known as “pink eye”—is one of the most frequent childhood health conditions encountered in early learning environments.

This week is National Child Protection Week and the theme this year is ‘Every Conversation Matters: Shifting Conversation to Action’.

We know that as parents it can be uncomfortable to think about, but it is vitally important to give your children the skills to listen to their bodies feeling unsafe and what to do about it from birth. We have a range of brochures in our foyer that our families can take to give them the confidence in building these conversations into everyday moments.

As a service, we have reflected about how we can shift conversation to action to support the young people we care for and educate. Over the coming weeks we will be providing our families with the opportunities to give feedback around how we incorporate protective behaviours into our programmes.
