Taking care of yourself isn't selfish — it's essential.
This is something we don't always do particularly well as men.
In our next Men in the Hood Gosnells session, we'll take a practical look at self-care, the habits that support us, the ones that hold us back, and what we can realistically do differently.
No lectures. No judgement. No expectation to have it all figured out.
Just a great group of blokes, honest conversation and some practical tools to take away.
Saturday 5 September | 1–4pm | Thornlie Park Centre
If you've been thinking about giving Men in the Hood a crack, this is a great session to jump into. Places are still available, check out the details below.

It's easy to make assumptions about people.
Someone doesn't reply.
A mate cancels.
Someone seems distant.
Someone says something that doesn't sit right with you.
And before we know it, we've created a story about why.
But the truth is, we rarely know what's really going on for someone.
Maybe they're struggling.
Maybe they're distracted.
Maybe they're carrying something you know nothing about.
So before you react, pause.
Get curious.
Ask yourself: Do I really know the whole story?
You don't have to agree with someone.
You don't have to excuse their behaviour.
But sometimes, giving yourself a moment before you judge can change the entire conversation.
Change inside. Improve outside.

We often wait until someone is struggling before we reach out.
But you don't need a reason to check in on someone.
Send the message.
Make the call.
Grab a coffee.
Ask how they're really going—and actually listen to the answer.
And don't forget to check in with yourself too.
Sometimes a simple "How are you going?" can mean more than you realise.
Change inside. Improve outside.
Sometimes, looking back is exactly what helps us move forward.
Today in Men in the Hood, the fellas took a look at their own journey — the achievements, the challenges, the moments that shaped them and the patterns that have followed them along the way.
Not to judge ourselves.
Not to beat ourselves up.
Not to relive the past.
Just to understand our story a little better and consider what we can learn from it moving forward.
And something shifted today.
The conversations got deeper. The vulnerability grew. The laughs were still there. And you could feel the guards starting to come down — maybe not all the way, but enough.
That's what happens when men keep showing up, keep leaning in and create a space where they can be themselves.
Bloody proud of these fellas. They were given the space to do the work, and they embraced it. 👊
This is what Men in the Hood is all about.

Sometimes the most valuable thing we can offer another person isn't advice.
It isn't fixing their problem.
It isn't having the perfect words.
It's simply being present enough to listen.
In a world full of opinions, listening is becoming a rare skill.
When we slow down, stay curious and truly hear someone else's story, we build trust, strengthen relationships and remind people they matter.
You don't have to solve everything.
Sometimes your presence is enough.
Change inside. Improve outside.

Sometimes the best way to move forward is to first understand where you've come from.
This Saturday in Men in the Hood, we're "Looking Back". Together we'll take time to reflect on the moments, experiences and people that have shaped us into the men we are today. It's not about dwelling on the past or reliving trauma. It's about noticing the patterns, recognising the lessons, celebrating the wins, and understanding how our past can help us make more intentional choices moving forward.
Ultimately, it's an opportunity to understand your story—not be defined by it. Like every Men in the Hood session, expect honest conversation, practical reflection and the support of a great group of blokes.
If you've been thinking about coming along, we'd love to have you join us. Details below including how to register.

We're often so focused on the next goal that we forget to acknowledge how far we've already come.
Growth isn't always dramatic.
Sometimes it's choosing patience instead of anger.
Speaking kindly to yourself.
Making one better decision today than you did yesterday.
Those small wins matter.
Take a moment to recognise your progress.
Then keep moving forward.
Because becoming a better man isn't about being perfect.
It's about continuing to grow.
Change inside. Improve outside.

Time is one of the few things we can never get back.
We protect our money.
We protect our homes.
We protect the people we love.
But how often do we protect our time?
Every time you say "yes" to something, you're saying "no" to something else.
Choose carefully.
Protect time for your health.
Protect time for your family.
Protect time to rest.
Protect time to grow.
Because the life you want isn't built overnight.
It's built by how you spend your days.
Change inside. Improve outside.

Today we're looking at the fifth stage of the MenTALL Wellbeing Continuum – Excelling.
There is no judgement in this continuum. It's simply a way of recognising where you might be today.
Excelling isn't about being perfect or having it all together. It's about using your experiences, strengths and growth to positively influence the people around you.
When we're excelling, we don't just improve our own lives—we help others improve theirs too.
The visual below shares some ways to continue growing while lifting others along the way.
Question:
Who has made a positive difference in your life, and what did they teach you? Give them a shout out in the comments.
Over the past week we've explored every stage of the MenTALL Wellbeing Continuum. My hope is that you've recognised where you are today—and more importantly, realised that wherever you are, there's always a next step.
