👉New Skilled Visa Processing Priorities — Now in Effect
👉Ministerial Directions 121 and 122 took effect on 19 September 2026, replacing Direction 119.
• Direction 121 covers subclass 482 applications.
• Direction 122 covers specified provisional and permanent skilled visas, including 186, 189, 190, 191, 491 and 494.
👉Priority goes to construction, healthcare, teaching, agriculture, aquaculture, fishing, resources, and Australia’s law enforcement and defence interests.
👉Applicants’ location at lodgement and whether offshore applications include other applicants also affect priority. Subclass 482 Specialist Skills applications have a separate priority category.

📌Net Overseas Migration
The Government aims to bring NOM down to 225,000 in 2027–28, in line with Budget forecasts.
📌Student and Graduate Visa Dependants
Restrictions are planned for family members joining most student and subclass 485 visa holders. Announced exemptions include Pacific and ASEAN nationals and PhD students, with protections for families already together in Australia.
📌Further Study and Course Transfers
Further study after completing a course would need to lead to a higher qualification. Genuine course extensions and transfers would be treated separately, with transfers requiring a new visa application.
📌Working Holiday Visas — Subclasses 417/462
A ballot is planned for second- and third-year visas, with regional work requirements retained. UK arrangements remain separate. Faster processing is planned for eligible non-UK applications.
📌Visitor Visas
The Government plans to introduce “No Further Stay” conditions on all future visitor visas to restrict onshore visa switching.
📌Skilled Migration Points Test
Housing trade qualifications would receive the same qualification points as university qualifications under the announced reform.
📌Processing Priorities
Changes to Ministerial Direction 119 would expand priority processing across key sectors, including agriculture, resources, aquaculture and fishing.
