Magellan Power began in 1991 inside the Myaree home Masoud Abshar shared with his wife, Lynne, and their two young daughters.

Masoud had a clear ambition: to manufacture power electronic systems locally in Australia and provide the level of service that customers operating in remote and demanding environments deserved.

As a young migrant and qualified power electronics engineer with limited resources, building that vision while supporting a growing family was not easy. But in December 1991, Masoud sat down at the family computer and designed Magellan’s first battery charger.

The backyard workshop came later. By 1993, Magellan Powertronics was operating from a newly built workshop behind the family home, earning Masoud the nickname “The Backyarder” from competitors.

They weren’t wrong, but he had a much bigger plan.

35 years later, Magellan Power remains proudly Australian-owned and family-run. What began as one family’s vision has grown into a team of over 100 people, including several parents, children, siblings and relatives working alongside one another throughout the business.

This National Family Business Day, we’re celebrating our beginnings, the families across our team and everyone who has helped build Magellan Power into what it is today.

What does energy independence mean to a remote operation that relies on diesel generation to keep running?

It means power systems performing at their peak for longer; extending asset life and reducing replacement costs. It means longer maintenance cycles, lower labour and fuel costs, and reduced OpEx. And it means your site can keep running through the unforeseen circumstances that would previously have compromised output, giving you genuine operational confidence.

Pilbara FORGE is built to deliver that independence.

Designed and manufactured in Australia for remote and rural network environments, Pilbara FORGE combines battery storage from 200kWh to 5,000kWh with inverter capacity from 100kW to 2,000kW - all intelligently managed by Magellan Power's Microgrid Energy Management System.

It absorbs excess solar generation during the day, stores it and dispatches it on demand; reducing generator run hours, cutting fuel consumption, and stabilising the power quality your equipment and operations depend on.

Engineered for Australia's harshest conditions, its ruggedised, liquid-cooled design maintains peak performance from –10°C to 55°C, with a >6,000-cycle life and >95% round-trip efficiency.

Built to Last. Serviced for Life. Made in Australia.

Did you know Magellan Power does more than just supply the battery?

On-Site Battery Discharge Testing: We verify capacity and performance against specification under controlled load, identify degradation trends early, and provide documentation for maintenance and compliance records.

Battery Monitoring Systems: We retrofit intelligent monitoring that provides continuous visibility of battery State of Health (SoH), State of Charge (SoC), impedance, temperature and alarms; helping extend service life and reduce the risk of unexpected failure.

Battery Recycling: Through our 4R Battery Ecosystem, end-of-life batteries are managed responsibly. We coordinate collection and accredited processing to maximise recovery and keep hazardous materials out of landfill.

Hydrogen Ventilation: Lead-acid batteries can generate hydrogen during charging. We supply hydrogen detection and ventilation solutions that support compliance with relevant standards, keeping installations safe.

From verifying capacity under real load conditions to real-time health monitoring, end-of-life management and safe installation environments, Magellan Power supports your battery infrastructure at every stage.

Powering critical systems across two major Australian energy storage projects.

When UGL required a standardised and highly reliable backup power architecture for Neoen's 164MW / 905MWh Muchea Battery in Western Australia and 305MW / 1,220MWh Western Downs Stage 3 Battery in Queensland, it engaged Magellan Power to deliver.

We designed and supplied dual-redundant 125VDC backup power systems for both projects, providing dependable power for critical control, protection and auxiliary loads.

Both systems were delivered on schedule and Factory Acceptance Tested at Magellan Power's facility before dispatch, with our team providing on-site commissioning support in Western Australia and Queensland.

The dual-redundant architecture maintains protection of critical loads if a single charger or battery string fails, building resilience into the infrastructure supporting each installation.

Designed and manufactured in Australia to support two of the country's major energy storage projects.

What kind of Australia will we leave behind for future generations?

Australia is an extraordinary country; its landscapes, communities and natural environment are all part of what makes it our home. The choices we make today will shape the Australia future generations inherit and protecting it is a responsibility we all share.

The energy transition is a very big part of protecting our country as best we possibly can. At Magellan Power, we’re proud to contribute to the transition by designing and manufacturing the critical power infrastructure supporting Australia’s shift towards cleaner, more reliable energy.

Together, we can help build a more sustainable energy future for the Australia we know today, and the generations who will call it home tomorrow.

How confident are you that your critical power system will perform perfectly when you need it?

When commissioning a backup generator, AC UPS system or a Battery charger, validating an energy storage system or executing a site acceptance test (SAT), simulating real-world operational demands is non-negotiable.

Magellan Power's AC & DC Resistive and Inductive Load Banks provide precise, reliable testing in industrial environments to ensure your critical systems remain compliant and operationally ready. Regular load bank testing identifies weaknesses before they become failures, so your infrastructure is prepared for whatever operational demands, fluctuations or unexpected conditions the site throws at it, reducing unplanned downtime.

Features:

- Precise Control – Equipped with customisable, accurate load steps to match specific simulation profiles.

- Built-In Operational Safety – Features multi-layer protection, including over-voltage, over-temperature alarms, fan interlocks and Emergency Power Off (EPO) functionality.

- Robust Componentry – Engineered using durable alloy resistors and an integrated local display panel for harsh environments.

- Flexible Configuration – Standard models start from 1kW up to multi-megawatt systems, with custom voltage and power ratings available on request to fit your facility’s unique architecture.

- Advanced Monitoring – Optional software integrations enable remote control and real-time data collection via PC.

- Customizable Enclosure – The type and IP rating of the enclosure can be customized based on the project requirement, to be suitable for indoor or outdoor application.

- Optional Remote Access – An optional PC software can be provided with the load bank as an optional feature to allow remote operation through a comms cable.

Don't wait for a power disruption to expose a vulnerability. Protect your operations with load testing technology built on decades of Australian engineering expertise.

According to IBISWorld, Australia’s oil and gas sector is expected to generate more than $80 billion in exports in 2027, making it the country's second largest exporting industry.

Remoteness, hazardous materials and limited emergency response capacity means incidents escalate fast; putting lives at risk, threatening lasting environmental damage and triggering reputational consequences that outlast the incident itself. Unplanned downtime is the least of the concerns.

Magellan Power has engineered DC power infrastructure for these operations for over 35 years. These environments demand a level of engineering rigour that off-the-shelf equipment simply cannot meet.

Offshore platforms: Salt mist and tight footprints demand ruggedised, spark-free DC UPS systems with high IP-rated enclosures. Advanced remote monitoring minimises costly fly-in maintenance.

Remote onshore sites: Abrasive dust and brutal temperature swings call for heavy-duty filtration, specialised thermal management and robust battery storage built to survive the outback.

Magellan Power DC power systems are designed and manufactured in Australia, by engineers who understand the demands of local oil and gas operations. That means equipment performing to spec, supported by the same local team across the full asset lifecycle — maintaining throughput, avoiding unplanned downtime and protecting the safety of your crew.
