The recent tragedy at Sorrento Beach has deeply affected our community, and our thoughts remain with the family and loved ones of the person who lost their life.

I understand why many people are asking what more can be done to improve shark mitigation and safety at our beaches. Our community deserves to have those questions taken seriously.

Next month, I will bring a motion asking Council to reaffirm its commitment to investigating commercially available and reliable beach safety measures, working in partnership with the State and Federal Governments, and engaging directly with the responsible State agencies.

This does not rule any appropriate solution in or out. Any long-term solution must be effective, practical, and supported by a clear understanding of which level of government is responsible for delivering and funding it.

The previous beach enclosure at Sorrento Beach was removed in late 2020 after an independent assessment identified significant structural damage and faults in the barrier. That assessment found the enclosure's integrity could no longer be guaranteed, and it was removed on safety grounds.

As Mayor, I will continue to work for measures that improve safety while ensuring decisions are informed by evidence, and expert advice.

The trees of the Northshore still stand tall and proud,
But the Once-lers are coming (they're not very loud).
They work in the background with schemes and with plots,
For roundabouts, medians, and parking lots.

By working together we can make them pause
