Expect to be squatting
Who ever I train (unless they donโt have legs) will be squatting, maybe twice a week depending on your goals ๐ค๐คทโโ๏ธ the depth, weight and variation might be scaled to suit what ever level, capacity or injuries you may have but rest assured you will be training a barbell squat of some kind ๐ช๐
For those contemplating signing up for the 3 month guided strength program starting in February here are a few more details.
Each week will consist of:
- An hour 1 on 1 session with me located at
- You will be expected to train 2 more programmed workouts on your own so you will need a gym membership or gym access.
- An optional group recovery session consisting of a thorough warmup, mobility exercises and partner stretching to have you walking away feeling amazing and ready to start the next week of training.
If you or anyone you know may be interested then feel free to tag them or tell them to send me a message and I will get back to them with more details or any questions they may have.

A Guided Strength Program
Starting in the first week of February I will be doing 1 on 1 sessions again based out of . Initially I will be taking on 10 more clients for a guided 3 month strength program tailored to suite each of the 10 clients goals but still utilising all the main barbell lifts as the base of their program.
This will be perfect for people who want to get stronger but donโt know where to start.
After the 3 months training with me you will be stronger but more importantly you will be confident enough to keep training and building more strength on your own ๐ค๐ช

The Deadlift and Injuries
The deadlift has been and will always be one on the best strength and muscle building exercises.
When ever I hear someone say โI canโt deadlift because it hurts my backโ I hurt a little inside ๐
because 90% of the time I know it is something that can be fixed, the other 10% have gone and been given a clear diagnosis and will know why they canโt. But for 90% it is always normally either a technical or muscular issue.
If you fall into this category before you cut them away completely, try using the deadlift as a different tool until you fix what ever is holding you back from being able to use it as a strength and muscle building exercise.
I have had an injured back more times than I probably should have in my time, some of the causes include: slipped facet joints pinching nerves, tight/weak glute med, tight hip flexors, injured ribs just to name a few (most a consequence of overtraining admittedly ๐
). It has never stopped me from deadlifting, it has only stopped me deadlifting heavy.
If you know itโs a muscular issues then include it as a warmup exercise for 4-6 weeks and just see what happens. Keep it super light (Iโm talking 10-20% of your 1rm) pump out 10-15 reps for 4-5 sets with short rest periods (30 seconds) before you start your training session and slowly taper up 5kg each week.
If itโs technical then seek guidance from a good coach to help fix it and back off the weight until you can perform the lift holding good posture comfortably.

Feel Good Sessions ๐
The older I get and the more value I put in recovery and the more you learn that doing nothing and resting is not necessarily the most efficient way to recover. A rest day for me will always include what I like to call a โfeel good sessionโ where I think the name speaks for itself, you should walk away from the session not fatigued or overworked but feeling good ๐ In a feel good session I will always put focus on what is feeling the most uncomfortable, may be aching shoulders, super tight hips or neck etc.
Then I will pick the exercises that will work those muscles through their full range of motion and add just enough weight to help stretch the muscle through the full movement but never too heavy that Iโm grinding reps, it is always about getting blood flow, good muscle activation and working through the full range of motion ๐
If the movement hurts do not let that stop you (assuming itโs not a serious injury ie torn ligamentโs broken bones etc). Work what range of motion you can and using the weight work towards getting back whatever range of motion you may have lost ๐ช๐
I will start posting up my feel good session in my story. Explaining what the focus is and then my exercise selection, then always finishing with sauna rounds and plunge pool/ice bath ๐

More Muscle Activation The Better
Have you ever noticed how on the days your struggling for motivation, or your mind is distracted by other things the weights somehow feel heavier?
These are normally the days we are reactive to the weights we lift, what I mean by that is you start the exercise feel the weight and put in as much energy as is required to do the liftโฆโฆ. and this is a very bad idea. This leads to the weight feeling heavier than it should, a possible breakdown in form and will just exacerbate an already unmotivated mind.
When I unrack a bar, pick up a kettlebell to swing, whether itโs a warm up weight or a working set, I engage every muscle I can. It enforces the discipline of good posture/form and I want the weight to feel light. The lighter the weight feels, the more confident in my strength I am and the heavier I feel like I can lift. Win win ๐
Just a couple of the little things I do to get more muscle activation include:
-When I grab the weight I am trying to use my grip strength to break the bar in my hand (forearm and rotator cuff activation)
-I try to bend the bar if it is a barbell exercise (lat activation)
-I clench my jaw and neck muscles (there are actual mouth pieces you can get for this)
-Play a good song
