ABOUT NATURE SCHOOL
Children today are growing up in a world very different from what our biology expects to experience.

Surrounded by technology, screens and artificial light, our kids are deficient in time outdoors connecting with nature.

Most could benefit from more time exploring creeks, catching grasshoppers, climbing trees, building shelters, making bow and arrows.

Nature school helps kids to feel comfortable in the outdoors during all seasons, from the heat of the summer to the cold of the winter.

Together we will explore natural environments, practice and learn earth based skills, as well as how to identify different plants and deepen our connection to the outside world.

Pine Pollen Harvesting Workshop - 19th September

Then spend the remainder of the time getting coated in the magical golden dust of the Pine Tree as you gather pollen until your heart is content.

Fire By Friction - August 15th

The creation and control of fire is one of the very things that makes us human and is a large part of what has allowed us to advance and evolve as a species.

Fire has been used for many things such as cooking food, purifying water, weapon making, landscape management, fire-stick farming, hunting, repelling biting insects, detoxification, keeping warm etc. 

Keep the wisdom of fire making in your mind and muscles by reconnecting with this ancient skill.

In this workshop you will learn:

- how to carve and shape wood
- the principles of wood and tinder selection.
- how to create a tinder bundle
- what coal extenders are and their use.
- how to create your very own bow-drill kit
- how to use the bow-drill successfully and some of the common mistakes that can arise during use.

Spoon Carving Workshop Saturday 6th June

Learn how to carve your very own spatula/ spoon at this beginners green wood carving workshop.

Similar to our green wood carving workshop we will begin the day learning about knife safety and the basics of carving wood.

Once the basics have been learned and practiced everyone will get some wood and start carving a spatula or a spoon or both if you pick it up fast or already know your way around a knife.

All materials and tools will be provided for you on the day however you’re welcome to bring your own tools if you like.

It's getting to that time of year for the 6 Week Rite of Passage.

It only runs once a year and is limited to 10 x spots.

WHAT IS A RITE OF PASSAGE
A rite of passage is a meaningful way of marking and celebrating the transition from one stage of life to another.

For thousands of years, cultures around the world recognised the importance of rites of passage as an essential part of community life.

They understood that without guidance, challenge, and support, young people could struggle to find their place and direction.

In modern society, many traditional rites of passage have disappeared. As a result, teenagers are often left to seek out their own ways of testing themselves — sometimes in ways that are risky, unhealthy, or disconnected.

Guiding your child through a rite of passage can help them develop confidence, resilience, self-awareness, and a deeper sense of belonging within themselves, their family, and their community.

While rites of passage differ across cultures and traditions, they all share three essential stages:

Separation – leaving behind the familiar and stepping away from a former stage of life.

Transition – a period of preparation, learning, challenge, and personal growth.

Integration – returning to family and community transformed, recognised, and welcomed into a new stage of life.

RITE OF PASSAGE 6 WEEK SKILL DEVELOPMENT

ABOUT
Over the course of the 6 weeks the children will be challenged to learn a variety of new skills based around survival.

The old self, uncertain on how to acquire food, water, fire and shelter will be forever left behind and a new self full of skills confidence will emerge.

The final week will be a challenge week where the kids will put their new skills to the test in order to provide, look after and and give back to their parents in a pretend survival situation.
