Another day, another important conversation.

WAPU representative Simone Taplin spoke with 6PR about the significant pay rise for WA Police Assistant Commissioners, which takes their salaries above $300,000.

The increase is 19.75%, bringing their total pay increase to more than 28% since 2024.

The question is simple: if the role of senior police leadership has changed significantly, haven’t the roles and responsibilities of frontline police officers changed too?

Our Members are dealing with increasing demands, growing risks and a challenging policing environment every day.

They deserve to see that recognised too.

New recruits are vital to the future of policing.

But when experienced officers leave faster than they can be replaced, the workforce becomes less experienced overall.

In 2018-19, Constables and Probationary Constables represented 14.2% of sworn officers. Today that figure is 23.2%.

This highlights the importance of retaining experienced officers who mentor, train and lead the next generation.

Western Australia's population continues to grow.

Yet the number of sworn police officers relative to the population has fallen by 10.6% since its peak in 1996-97 and remains below the level seen when the current Government was first elected.

As communities expand and demand grows, resourcing the police workforce remains a critical challenge.

The warning signs are impossible to ignore.

WA Police recorded an attrition rate of 6.97% in 2025-26, making it the fourth highest rate in the past 70 years.

While recruitment remains critical, retaining experienced officers must be an equal priority.

A sustainable police force needs both.

This should concern every Western Australian.

A record 87 police officers were medically retired in 2025-26, equal to the previous nine years combined.

These are officers who have dedicated their careers to protecting the
community but were ultimately unable to continue serving due to injury or illness.

Behind every resignation is a trained and experienced police officer who has walked away from the job.
In 2025-26, 300 sworn officers resigned from WA Police. While resignations have decreased from recent record highs, they remain significantly above historical levels.
Every officer who leaves takes years of skills, experience and operational knowledge with them.
WA Police can't afford to keep losing experienced officers.
