R U OK Day: Why educator wellbeing is a workforce sustainability issue

Educators carry significant emotional labour every day: regulating children's behaviour, managing complex family relationships, and meeting compliance and documentation demands, often on tight margins and thin staffing ratios. It's demanding work, and the mental health cost is real.

This R U OK? Day, here are some practical starting points for workplaces:

-Build in real breaks. Ratios and rostering that protect actual downtime, not just paper compliance.
-Normalise the check-in. A simple, genuine "how are you going?" from leadership signals psychological safety.
-Invest in professional development that includes wellbeing. Training in areas like behaviour support and stress management gives educators tools, not just expectations.
-Create clear pathways to support. Make sure staff know what's available, e.g. EAPs, supervision, peer support, and that using them isn't stigmatised.

Sustainable careers in ECE depend on workplaces that actively support the people doing this work.
