Makaela Rowe-Fox reflects on the first stage of her Know Thy Neighbour #4 residency, working together with City of Stirling community groups through workshops and excursions to Cottonwood Reserve.

“The home-made microscopes are built with two magnifying lenses inside PVC pipe held together by a makeshift frame. On one end, cheap phones are attached looking through our DIY lenses creating a macro camera effect.

Due to the curved lenses, the images we see through our microscope-cameras are inverted; literally turning our perspective upside down.”

⋆˚࿔ "Whether we’re here, or not here, there will always be a Buffalo Club” 𓄋 🍻

Know Thy Neighbour #4 artist Cara Teusner-Gartland works with Vessel Contemporary on her project that explores the Fremantle Buffalo club as a site of shared activities and community work. Cara recalls her interviews with twelve Club members, ending each session with the same question: What would you like this club to look like in 50 years?

“I’d like to see the club carry on as it is - that it is a true community social club […] giving back to the community that helps [it] to survive.”

“I’d like to be sitting at the bar, where Kevin Elliott and Micky Sheehy are now, and have a yarn with whoever else is running this place.”

“I remember Leo saying to me, Vicki, whether we’re here, or we’re not here, there will always be a Buffalo Club.”

⋆˚࿔ Project Partner Spotlight: City of Swan ⋆.˚🦢⋆

Know Thy Neighbour #4 artist Eduardo Cossio is working together with City of Swan for his project on cycling networks, working locally within the City of Swan’s urban developments and nature reserves.

City of Swan is the largest local government by land size in the metropolitan area, covering almost 20 per cent of Perth. Rich in natural assets like Derbal Yerrigan (Swan River) and the Swan Valley, the City blends stunning landscapes with a strong sense of place. The land provided a natural abundance of food and water resources to the Whadjuk people of the Noongar Nation for over 40,000 years, who developed a rich history of customs in the area, many of which continue to the present day. The community also reflects a rich blend of European heritage and multicultural diversity, with one in three residents born overseas and nearly a quarter speaking a language other than English at home.

⋆˚࿔ Counter-mapping Burswood Park 𓍢ִ໋🏃‍♀🌷͙֒✧˚.

For the next stage of her Know Thy Neighbour #4 residency, artist Cassandra Tytler works with over 55 Parkrunners, creating a counter-map that explores sensory worlds within a place.

“[Counter-mapping] offers a way of paying attention to what falls outside the usual boundaries and categories through which a place is understood. The Parkrunners mapped bodies, sounds, weather, animals and the things that drew them outside of themselves, but spending time in the park, listening to the place and learning from the people and researchers I’ve met has made me think about all the other experiences of this same place that we don’t see, hear or even consciously sense. These aren’t just interesting additions to the park. They are lives and relationships that are continually being altered by the decisions we make about what a place is for.”

⋆˚࿔ SOUND BIKING with Eduardo Cossio 🚲ᯓ⋆.ೃ

SOUND BIKING presents a series of workshops centred on sonic practices: listening, recording, performing and radio-making. Know Thy Neighbour #4 artist and musician Eduardo Cossio takes participants on collective bike rides where we discover with our ears, starting on the bike trails of Dayton.

Cycle paths criss-cross unique soundscapes. Through attentive listening, the workshops invite cyclists to connect with the sonic environment, query its health, and develop site-specific responses culminating in a RADIO RIDE, a live transmission from the cycle paths.

Bring an open mind, open ears, and your bike! 👂ྀི

⋆˚࿔ Project Partner Spotlight: WFAC, DADAA & WASA💥.ᐟ.ᐟ

For his Know Thy Neighbour #4 residency, HEAVY DUTY’s Jack Morellini works together with Walyalup Fremantle Arts Centre (WFAC), DADAA Fremantle and West Australian Skateboarding Association (WASA), investigating the unnoticed gestures taking place between the people and communities in Fremantle’s Princess May Park and Elders Woolstores.

WFAC is a creative campus - a cultural and learning precinct situated in Walyalup (Fremantle) on Whadjuk Nyoongar Boodjar in the centre of a city celebrated for its innovation, culture and creativity, shaped by the many communities who call it home. WFAC’s annual program includes contemporary visual arts exhibitions and a diverse range of multidisciplinary performance, music and discourse.

DADAA has been at the forefront of disability arts and Community and Cultural Development in Western Australia for the past 30 years. They create inclusive communities through arts mentoring and studio programs, collaborating with communities on large scale projects, and providing access to arts and culture for people with disability.

WASA is a not-for-profit incorporated association that aims to nurture skateboarding and its culture throughout Western Australia. They are a group of passionate skateboarders who volunteer their time to keep their community thriving. Over the past two years WASA has campaigned to protect the world famous Woolstores Ledges from demolition during the building's redevelopment.
