Our team came together on R U OK? Day to pause, connect and reflect with one another, thanks to a meaningful day of activities coordinated by our Corporate Services team.
While sharing food and spending time together is always appreciated, the focus of the day was creating space for meaningful conversations and reflections, genuine check-ins, and opportunities to connect with one another. We wanted the message behind R U OK? to extend beyond a single day.
We spent the afternoon participating in a range of activities, organised by the Corporate Services team, which included:
🟡 Fun the Mental - we had some very creative and fun handcrafted games which were made by Ray from 'Fun the Mental'. This brought a lot of laughter, friendly competition and plenty of conversation.
🟡 Three things that help me through a tough day - staff shared tips on what helps them get through a tough day whether it be a quick chat with colleagues, taking a walk, music, dogs, or coffee. These have be pinned up to inspire us whenever we need to take a moment.
🟡 ASeTTS Values Tree - staff shared what positive workplace behaviours look like in practice, how staff support one another and how ASeTTS values can be reflected in everyday interactions. We used the Rock, Stick, Leaf Reflection to guide us in this activity.
🟡 Plant and Chat - staff chatted, painted, and planted pot plants in pairs. Plants will remain as an ongoing reminder to keep check in with one another.
A big thank you to everyone who participated and helped make the day meaningful. We hope to continue with the reflections of the day beyond

Meet Ayesha (left) and Fatima (right), our new Reception and Administration Officers.
While they may be the friendly faces that welcome our clients, interpreters, and guests as they walk through our doors, their role extends beyond the front desk. They provide essential administrative support across the organisation helping to ensure our teams can deliver the best possible service.
Ayesha comes from a background of working closely with people from a wide range of backgrounds, particularly within roles focused on support, connection and community. She said "I'm really excited to be part of ASeTTS and to work alongside such a caring team, contributing to something that makes a genuine difference in people's lives."
Fatima comes from a background in Information Technology and community services and has recently been supporting our clients through various programs as a Bicultural Facilitator. Fatima shared, "I am eager to be the welcoming face of ASeTTS and create a warm, supportive experience for everyone walking through our doors. I’m excited to combine my background in Community Services and IT to keep our administration running smoothly while growing both personally and professionally alongside this wonderful team."
We are excited to have them on board and look forward to the valuable contribution they will make to our organisation.
We’re proud to share this story from one of the participants in this year’s Cook Like a Chef program for men.
The program is not just about learning cooking skills. It creates a welcoming space where men can build practical life skills, gain confidence, and connect with other people from different cultures.
Hearing firsthand how these experiences help create friendships, belonging and growth reminds us why programs like this matter. Stories like this also remind us of the impact our team can make everyday.
Thank you Farouk for sharing your experience with us. 🌻

On Tuesday, our MEN4Men (Meaningful Engagement & Networking for Men) group came together for a focus session to share feedback on last year’s program and offer ideas for the year ahead. Their contributions are an important part of our co‑design approach, ensuring the men help shape a program that reflects what they value, enjoy, and want to build together.
After the session, the group proudly sat around the newly made benches and tables to enjoy lunch. These were built earlier this year during the men’s wood working sessions at the Fremantle Men’s Shed, a perfect way to celebrate their hard work, and new skills from something they enjoyed building together.

Thank you to Royal Life Saving Society WA for including ASeTTS' Community Development Officer Zainab in this important conversation.
Zainab shared the challenges people from refugee and humanitarian backgrounds can face when learning to swim, including past trauma. She reflected on the impact of ASeTTS' women-only swimming program, delivered in partnership with Royal Life Saving. Partnerships like this are so important, as it brought together ASeTTS’ trauma‑informed expertise and Royal Life Saving swimming and water safety expertise, and both providing a culturally safe environment to create a well‑rounded, empowering program where women thrived and felt connected.
